I have been pondering what to write for Wovengold’s Summer Solstice write-off for over a week. Trying to think of something that pertains to summer and something I enjoy. Since I love to mow the lawn, I wanted to write about my new lawn mower, epinions doesn’t have it, along with about 4 other things I wanted to write about. So I picked Fiskars Garden Shears since they make some things that I enjoy much easier.
Why I Bought Them
My Mother always used to get mad when I would use sewing scissors for cutting paper or hair cutting scissors for cutting fabric, I never knew the difference. As you get older, you realize why they make a certain scissors for every activity. When I am in the garden and trying to cut flowers, regular scissors just do not do the job. So walking through Wal-Mart one day I was looking at gardening tools in the garden and noticed a selection of gardening shears. The Fiskars® Garden Shears caught my eye with the bright orange handle and of course the well-known name.
What I Use Them For
Well, everything! My favorite use it to bring it with me when I travel to town. I usually make a stop someplace that I see a field of wild flowers and bring some home to make a bouquet. It cuts them easily and they look much better then when you try to pull them out of the ground with your hand. My next favorite use is pruning small shrubs or bushes. You would think you would need a pruning shears for this, but with the Fiskars Garden Shears it cuts through them like butter. If you have ever tried to open a bag of potting soil without scissors you will find that it just doesn’t work like you plan. But with Fiskars® Garden Shears you will get a perfect cut every time and a lot less hassle. I also use them for cutting skinny dowels that I use as wooden stakes for plants that need support. It doesn’t exactly cut through these like butter but it does do the job. Of course there are the simple tasks that you can use these shears for also, such as cutting paper, cardboard, poster board or screens. Truly, you will find that you use these for more than just gardening.
Cut, Splice and Dice Wires
The Fiskars® Garden Shears 9637 have a notched edge which is used to cut small wire. You lay the wire in the indentation/notch and snip, your are done. This makes it very easy to splice wires for speakers or other small tasks that you would otherwise call for a whole different tool. Even though I have given these shears a work-out over the months of use, they are still cutting like they did the day I bought them.
Give Your Fiskars Some Love!
One thing I have found that keeps scissors in good working order is to coat the blades in oil after each use or before I store them. I use a light cooking or vegetable oil and take a basting brush and just give it a good coat paying attention to the joint thingy that I can’t remember the name of! Someone help...
These blades are precision ground stainless steel but as you know, some parts can still rust. So if you do have to wash them, make sure they get dried completely before you store them. Also note that there is a lifetime warranty on these shears.
Why They Don’t Get 5 Stars!
I am a lefty and do most things with my left hands. You ask “Jill why did you buy righty Shears then?” Well because that is one thing I do use my right hand for. For some reason when it comes to scissors, my left hand is worthless. But I didn’t see a set of scissors of this type in the store, they may have them, but I didn’t see them. And if you are a lefty and use your left hand for using scissors you will not be able to use these. Besides the fact that they are only for right-handed people, they are very comfortable and easy to grip. Even with my small hands I find them extremely easy to use.
If the Fiskars Gardening Shears aren’t for you, I recommend trying out Fiskars® Softouch® Micro-Tip® Pruning Snip (#9921) or Fiskars® Softouch® Serrated Floral Snip (#9931)
**CAUTION! Please keep out of childrens reach as these could easily cut off a finger!!
