Pros: sharp stainless steel blades, soft-grip handles provide extra comfort, pivot screw to adjust blade tension
Cons: the scissors come in one color
The Bottom Line: The Bottom Line has "borrowed" my Fiskars scissors. Should I charge a rental fee if they aren’t promptly returned?

| dlstewart's Full Review: Fiskars Multipurpose Scissors 6" Long Right Hand/L... |
I own a lot of scissors. Thats because I sew, do crafts, and generally cut a lot of items whether they are of fabric, paper or other materials. When I first saw Fiskars MultiPurpose Scissors, I was intrigued by their different look and soft-grip handle. I had to own a pair.
Description
These scissors have gray soft touch handles that measure 6" long (from the pivot screw to the end of the handles). The gray handles are called soft-touch handles since they have a bit of give to them. They are not a cushy material ... definitely plastic but with a softer grip than a regular hard-handled pair of scissors.
Fiskars has constructed these scissors handles differently than traditional scissors. The bottom of the handles have a large open area that easily fits the four fingers while the thumb rests on the top scissors handle. The scissors have spring action to open and close the blades.
Technically the scissors stainless steel blade could be called 4" long if the scissors are measured from the scissor tip to the axis screw. However, the actual blade measurement is 3 5/8" long. An orange locking mechanism on top of the scissors slides to open and lock closed the scissors blades. The orange piece is grooved to help the thumb feel the sliding mechanism.
A neat feature of these scissors is that they can be used by right- and left-handed people. Or in my case, I can use the scissors in either hand since Im ambidextrous.
My Experiences
These are wonderful scissors. I purchased them to cut fabric for my sewing and quilting projects. I had seen them used in a sewing workshop and loved the way they cut. The soft-grip handles were relatively new at the time, and I loved the fact that I could use the scissors for long periods of time without having the handles cut into my fingers. I was using these scissors before I discovered the joys of using a rotary cutter. These Fiskars scissors are the first pair of scissors I reach for if a rotary cutter isnt the best tool for a cutting job.
I used these Fiskars scissors so much that over time the gray soft-grip handles have become harder. They dont have as much give, but they are still softer than using a regular pair of scissors that have hard plastic handles. The blades are still great on the scissors and cut well.
Since these scissors have about ten years of dedicated service, I decided to retire them to paper cutting projects instead of fabric cutting. They still cut fabric well. However, I saw a sale on another pair of these scissors and could not resist purchasing a second pair. The newest pair of scissors is now my dedicated fabric cutting shears, while the older pair cuts everything from paper and thin cardboard to ribbon and string.
I have never had to adjust the tension of either pair of scissors. However, if I needed to do so, there is a small phillips head screw on the side of the scissors. These scissors have also never seen a drop of oil.
Not once in all the years of owning these scissors have I had to sharpen the blades. The scissors action is smooth, almost effortless. The blades cut cleanly, too, and have never discolored.
I also like the orange sliding lever that opens and locks the scissors. There is no chance of these scissors accidentally springing open. I have carried them to workshops and around the house without worrying about the blades opening unless I want them to open. It is easy to place the thumb on the orange lever to slide it open and closed with one hand. I have frequently done this during projects. Scissors in one hand, fabric or craft materials in the other hand, I can easily open and close the scissors blades with the flick of my thumb.
Purchasing
I purchased my first pair of these scissors at a local fabric store. The second pair of scissors came from a wholesale shopping club. They average about $12.00 to $15.00 a pair depending upon where they are purchased.
Summary
I highly recommend the Fiskars MultiPurpose Scissors to anyone in need of a reliable pair of scissors with a soft grip. They also come in handy if there are both left- and right-handed people who need to use them. These scissors are a must for my sewing and crafts!
I hope you have found this review useful.
