When I discovered that there was an office supplies section here at Epinions my initial reaction was, "Who's boring enough to write such a review?" Yup, guess it's me.
As a college student notebooks are a necessity for class. In high school many teachers scorned the use of spiral notebooks because papers were often handed in, but now that notes are for my sole usage, I find the convenience of keeping them all in one neat little book can't be beat. But I won't settle for just any generic notebook -- the spiral wire often will uncoil and jab me in the arm as I carry it, or the paper is dingy and yellowish, and the covers often fall off. Though Five Star notebooks are pricier, I find the additional cost to be well worth it.
Mead's Five Star notebooks come in one subject, three subject, and five subject varieties with 100, 150, and 200 sheets of paper inside, respectively. You have the choice of wide ruled or college ruled paper, and I see at www.staples.com that Mead also offers a Left-Hander's notebook that is bound on the right. (Too bad I didn't know when I was shopping!)
The front cover of Five Star notebooks are made of a durable plastic rather than the typical paperboard stuff. The back is made of cardboard. A strong cover is essential in keeping your notes intact; with Mead's Five Star you needn't worry about losing front or back cover. Another nice additional feature of these books are the Handy Reference Guides on the inside of the back cover. There is a multiplication table, dry, linear, liquid, and miscellaneous measure table, a chart of misspelled words, and a space to jot down phone numbers. The inside of the front cover contains lines in which to write your course schedule.
Inside the notebooks you will find either one, three, or five full-sized folders of manila paper. These are really useful for the times when professors give hand-outs to the class. This feature is one of the reasons I consistently buy Mead notebooks.
The paper is of a high quality and is always nice and pristine white rather than that yellowed color you sometimes find in cheaper notebooks. Also, every Mead notebook contains their "Neat Sheet" paper, which is perforated. Say good bye to those ugly, ratty edges when you tear pages out of your book.
One area I feel this product falls short is in color selection. I find it useful to color-code my notebooks in order to keep my subjects straight. There is nothing worse than showing up to your Short Story class with your Spanish notebook. I have found Mead's Five Star notebooks in black, gray, maroon, a steel blue, navy blue, and blue-green. That's it. Maybe I'm alone in color coding. If so, this won't be a problem for you.
Another potential drawback to these notebooks is the price. At www.staples.com the prices are listed as follows: one subject $4.15, three subject $5.25, five subject $6.95. They are on sale right now at the site, however, for $1.54, $3.34, and $4.74 each. When I purchased mine at back to school time at Target I paid around $1.40 a piece for the one subject notebooks, which is quite a fair price. Look for sales as otherwise I think the price is a little steep.
Mead's Five Star notebooks can be found at most any store that sells office or school supplies. Be on the lookout for sales at back to school time. If you'd like more information on any of Mead's products you can check them out at www.meadweb.com.
Well, I guess now that I've written a review of notebooks I'm officially one of the most boring writers at Epinions. Thanks for reading!
