If you want the flavor of the Las Vegas Strip without throngs of kids interrupting the atmosphere, then the Flamingo Hilton might be your best choice. It is mid-range in both price and local. Easy walking distance to some top of the line casinos as well as some smaller ones. Nice rooms in step with the Hilton philosophy, relatively cheap. There is a nice coffee shop and buffet without the long lines. The casino is big with a relatively older crowd. Much less noise than some of the newer ones. Plus no theme park. Most of the dealers are not the friendly talkative type, but if you want talk go downtown.
The good is that you are really centrally located. You cross the street to Caesar's, Bally's, and the Bellagio. Next door to the Barbary Coast and a short walk to Harrah's. It is ideal. Check in is fast. If you want to get married the Flamingo has one of the nicest wedding chapels around. There are also very few kids. As a teacher, I go to Vegas to get away from kids.
The bad is that I have never had much luck with the slots. Lots of tables to choose from as long as you aren't looking for $5 or less tables.
but if you are you are close to O'Shay's and the Barbary.
My wife and I stay at the Flamingo at least twice a year and are guite satisfied there.
