I must tell you that I have become something of an expert on diaper products. My daughter, Emily, is just over nine-months-old and has very sensitive skin, just like her mommy. Since she rules the roost around here, when she has a sore hiney, it's bad news my household. Typically, I use A&D Original Diaper Ointment as a maintenance tool for the diaper area. Unfortunately, the last rash that Emily got was not clearing up as quickly as I expected, so I tried Flanders Buttocks Ointment on the advice of a friend. This product works great on ugly diaper rash.
What on earth is this stuff? And where do I buy it?
Flanders Buttocks Ointment is a very thick, brownish diaper cream described as "a diaper rash formula and skin protectant." The ointment comes in a white tube with red and blue lettering and a picture of a baby on the front. It is sold where baby diaper products are sold if the store carries it. I could not find this stuff anywhere but an old fashioned drug store (i.e. independent pharmacy and drug) down here in Virginia. After looking on-line, I noticed that Flanders Buttocks Ointment is distributed in Charleston, South Carolina and is mostly carried in: NC, FL, OK, and SC. Most pharmacies will order this for you. You can also order this on CVS.com or www.shopinprivate.com
Directions and How I liked it
The directions for diaper rash cream are pretty self explanatory, but I'll assist those of you who are unenlightened on this subject. You should change your child's diaper promptly, cleanse the area, and apply the ointment liberally all over the diaper area. Flanders also suggests that this product be applied at each diaper change and, in particular, "when exposure to wet diapers may be prolonged" (i.e. bedtime).
Flanders Buttocks Ointment is really, really thick and tough to get out of the tube. It would be better packaged in a jar, in my opinion, because it is a real chore to get this stuff out! Once you get it out, it is easy to apply to your baby's diaper area. It is kind of messy and has a brown color that can stain, if you are not careful. The smell is fine for a diaper ointment. It kind of reminds me of baby powder, but not as pleasant. I mean, what do you expect? It's a diaper ointment! I found this product to work very well on Emily's rash. Within one day, there was noticeable improvement. Within two days, pretty much back to normal. Pretty impressive!!
As an aside..................
Another hint that I have found helpful: if possible, it's good allow your baby to hang out without his/her diaper for awhile in order to allow the air to get to the area. Not only is it soothing, it also promotes healing. Incidentally, they really like being naked anyway!
How Much and What's In it?
A four ounce tube of Flanders Buttocks Ointment cost me $6.38. This may seem expensive, but it works really well, and it lasts awhile. I found the price to be reasonable.
Active Ingredients (from packaging):
White Petrolatum 66.2% and Zinc Oxide 13.4% (both are skin protectants)
Castor oil, light mineral oil, peruvian balsam, white beeswax
A Word to the Wise
The packaging on Flanders Buttocks Ointment warns that it may stain clothing. This is definitely true, so you have to be careful when you apply it. Otherwise, you can ruin garments. This product is for "external use only" and "should not be used over deep or puncture wounds, infections, or lacerations." Additionally, if the diaper rash does not improve within 7 days, you should contact your pediatrician. Of course, if ever the rash seems severe or is not improving, you should contact the doctor.
Life is back to Normal!
Recently, I was complaining to my sister about how cranky Emily was due to teething and her diaper rash. My five-year-old niece, who was listening to the conversation exclaimed, "Well, how would you feel if your butt was sore?" That certainly put it all in perspective for me! Flanders Buttocks Ointment is an effective product for diaper rash that won't clear up with the regular ointments. If you want to find out more information about this product, go to their website:
