Durability:
Pros:Extremely girlie, great for Princess parties, battery powered.
Cons:Will kill batteries if left on over night.
The Bottom Line: No self respecting princess would be caught dead without one of these!
If you have a little princess or even a princess in training you know that there are a lot of accessories that come along with the gig. Thankfully my little diva isn't a complete girlie girl; she still enjoys mucking it up with the boys, climbing trees and getting so dirty that you need a pressure washer to blast off the top layers of dirt. Even so, when she goes in to princess mode, well, things like this are an inevitable happening. I bought three of these through the Century Novelty online store and while I balked at paying almost three dollars a piece for them I was pleasantly surprised at their overall look, performance and that they are not glow-stick powered. The glow stick ones are less than half the price of this flashing wand but they are a constant glow and you need to replace the glow stick after about a half hour. This was longer than what I expected it to be; its about eight inches long and extremely girlie. It is made up of two parts that unscrew so you can change the batteries. So far I have only had to change them once and the replacement batteries were five dollars for a package of six of them so there are three more in the cabinet when the wand starts to lose its power. Two of the wands were purple in color and one was red; I didn’t know that there were different colors but one of the girls didn’t really care what color she got so she ended up with the red one. These flash / blink but not so fast that it gives you a headache; Century Novelty sells a lot of different wands that light up, flash or use glow sticks so if this one isn’t to your liking there are others to choose from. The only downside is that there is no wrist wrap that girls can use to hold on to this, that could make it a little awkward to carry if they are using this when trick or treating. The diva has had more than a couple light up crowns, tiaras and wands over the past few years but this one is one of the cutest and strongest. If I would have known that this was so well made I would have ordered it a long time ago. We have a lot of junk stores in the area and in the Strip District that sell comparable items and even though this is made in China I know it is something that is going to last a long time. She has stepped on it a few times and there are no breaks or cracks to it; the other two I purchased also see regular use and the girls moms said that they are both still working perfectly. There is a lot of textured detail to the star part of the wand but the handle only had it half way up the piece, even so, it has a nice look whether it is on or off and will make any princess giddy. You do need to make sure that the small switch is turned off when they are done using it, she left it on one night when she went to brush her teeth and it was completely dead in the morning. A tough lesson to learn but since then she has been really good about shutting it off. These are not cheap; I paid almost three dollars a piece for them but I do have to admit that they were more than worth it. You can get a price break if you buy in bulk but unless you have a lot of extra coin to throw around I can’t see someone buying a ton of these to drop the price to $1.50. They are cheaper than the magic wands from Disney that make noises but for less than three dollars I was more than impressed with how this worked, the brightness of it and that it didn’t have a strobe effect when it blinked / flashed. If you don't want a single colored flashing wand with a tinted plastic base there are a couple that will flash different colors; those are the same price and have almost the same design to them so if you want to mix and match them with this version you can do so without kids bickering that someone got one that looks nicer than another one. No doubt I will get another one of these when or if this one ever breaks; it is something cute and girlie and perfect for little girls that plan on dressing up as a princess for Halloween. The top section of the star has some small sprigs that come off of it for decoration but they are not sharp. You do need to check them from time to time to see if there are any cracks to them; while this one has not had this problem, other wands with these types of accents have had the accent pieces crack or break and leave behind a rather sharp area that could easily scratch skin.
