fishifishi's Full Review: Fleur De California Pinot Noir Fleur De Carneros 2...
I got my hands onto a bottle of 2007 Fleur de California Pinot Noir completely by accident and cost free, but sometimes that's the best way to try a new wine. No mulling over the cost, picking between a safe bet and a chance gem-works for me! Even better when the wine is in the Epinions database, so I can share my experience!
I did a bit of quick research and found that this 750ml green Burgundy shaped bottle retails for about $15. The label is fairly simple, with the name, designation (Carneros) and some pretty flowers, although there is a sort of chintzy style to the design. The back label indicates that the wine has ‘exuberant' fruitiness, goes great with food, and is drinkable immediately. The wine has 13.5% alcohol by volume.
The (synthetic) cork was removed, and the blind experiment began-I had never heard of this wine, and that was somewhat exciting (and somewhat frightening!). I poured a remarkably light bodied cranberry colored wine into the glass, and breathed in its scent. It was faint, but there was raspberry, a hint of pine, and, to be honest, a little alcohol. I took a hearty sip, and found a medium bodied but deep wine. The Fleur Pinot Noir holds a remarkable ménage of flavors, starting with deep dark fruit-berry but not sweet, not quite bitter-sort of like a not quite ripe blueberry or blackberry-or prune, actually. There's also a smooth mossiness, a hint of white pepper, and an overall heft to it that you wouldn't anticipate by looking at it. There's nothing cloying, mind you, but it's not dainty either. The finish has a bite, almost leather, that makes you think it'll go sour in your mouth at the end-but it doesn't.
This would be an excellent dinner wine, and presently most important, a great Thanksgiving wine! I would definitely pair it with poultry, hearty pork, and all the fixin's. However, it's drinking just fine on its own, and would be good with some mere cheese and crackers.
If I ran across this bottle, especially at $15 or lower, I would definitely grab it again. It's not going to crack my top 10 favorites, but it's a decent quality, tasty, inexpensive bottle of Pinot Noir, and that's not always easy to find.
