| JasonNYCity's Full Review: Flor de Mayo |
This is a review of the Flor de Mayo Location on 83rd and Amsterdam. Flor de Mayo is a good and inexpensive Chino Latino (Peruvian) restaurant.
Atmosphere: The restaurant is brightly lit, and packed with tables for 2 and 4. You have to pass the bar to enter the restaurant, making it a bit difficult to get into the place during peak dining hours. There is a TV tuned to sports in the back of the restaurant. There is sometimes a wait during the busiest hours, but it isn't that long. I tend to see a lot of young people and couples eating here.
Food: Their rotisserie chicken is superb. It is moist, juicy, delicious, and comes with a wonderful spicy/sour dipping sauce. You can get fried rice (with shrimp and ham) which is good, but I tend to order white rice and a side order of garbanzos (chickpeas.) I have all my friends hooked on Flor de Mayo's chicken. I have also had their chuletas (pork chops) which are thick, juicy, and very good. Their sweet plantains are tasty as well. I have had their flan, which wasn't horrible, but I have had better flan at many other restaurants.
Flor de Mayo's sangria is very good. You can taste that they use a nice red wine. There are marachino chrries (why?) and pieces of orange and granny smith apple in it. A small pitcher is $8, and a large is $15.
Prices: The chicken or pork chops run about $8 a plate.
Dessert: My friends liked the flan, but they don't really have a reference to compare it to since they don't usually eat Latin foods. I would recommend going around the corner to Cafe Lalo for dessert assuming that it is not during peak hours (when the place is packed.)
Service: the waiters are polite and the service is good. About half of them speak Spanish, although you should be able to order in Spanish regardless if you keep it simple.
