Okay, so Ill admit it, when I first got to review Flushed Away, I thought to myself How hard can this game be, a couple of mice flushed down the sewer . Boy was I wrong! This is one of the harder games I have reviewed recently. It takes a good deal of skill and above all, patience, to play this game and win. While I will not spoil the ending by giving it away, I will take you through some of the more interesting missions. Here we go..
Meet Roderick St. James (his friends call him Roddy), of the Kensington St. Jamess (what, youve never heard of them??). Roddy is a well to do Mouse about Town. He is very well spoken and well mannered and begins the game in his Kensington apartment accompanied by his servants. Roddy runs through an obstacle course to get accustomed to the controls, and practices his fencing skills (with his trusty toothpick). Once he is set, Roddy starts by getting around his apartment living room and kitchen, avoiding obstacles and automated eraser firing guns. Once through the kitchen, a sewer rat named Sid comes up from the sink and wants to enjoy what Roddy has, so Roddy makes a plan to lure Sid into the Loo for a dip! The plan backfires and Roddy is the one that gets flushed into the sewers. Here is where the mission gets difficult. Roddy encounters his first of many enemies, namely strangely dressed spiders who speak with Spanish accents. They are fairly easy to defeat, leaving behind coins that you collect. Roddy also deals with funny little slugs who shoot slime at him. These guys are my favorites, as they have the funniest sayings as you battle them. There is a host of other enemies Roddy will encounter, such as Fat Barry, Thimblenose Ted, Ladykiller, The Flabby and the Soccer Thugs. Along the way, Roddy can also pick up salvage parts (mostly light brown boxes) which he can later sell to the salvage man for more money to buy supplies. This first mission completes when Roddy collects a bottle of six flies and makes his way further up in the sewer system to deliver them to Socketset, a rather creepy character in the Harbor.
Next up is Rita. She is a loveable rat who comes from the sewers and is always at odds with Roddy. She is from the wrong side of the tracks you may say. Rita is given her first mission of stealing a valuable gem from the Toad. Toad is a big fat toad who lives in a plush house/museum. Rita makes her way through the mission, avoiding two of Toads henchmen, Spike and Whitey. These two brutes are on constant lookout for Rita and Roddy, wanting to make them sleep with the fishes. Rita must avoid them, break into Toads warehouse and make her way into Toads bedroom, where he is sleeping, and albeit a very light sleeper. Rita must sneak her way into the museum and figure out how to release the gem from its case (sorry, you have to figure this one out yourself!) Once she has the gem, the alarm sounds and she must escape without being caught by Spike and Louie. Once out, we switch back to Roddy.
Roddy now teams up with Rita aboard her electric boat named the Jammy Dodger. After a brief tutorial of how to work the Jammy, its off they go to complete some missions, including saving an orphanage from being flooded. They make a good team, with Rita piloting the Jammy and Roddy firing the crossbow from the front and rear to take out Toads lackeys who are after them. Our heroes get caught however and the Toad orders them sealed in ice. They manage to escape and Rita takes off in the Jammy, leaving Roddy to fend for himself. Roddy has to find his own way out of Toads lair, and then try to catch up with Rita. When he finally does, they both return to the sewer where Roddy can ask two characters for different kinds of missions to complete, buy supplies, and sell salvage he collected on his way, or from the Jammy Dodger. If you want a new mission or just a way to earn some extra money, pay a visit to Socketset or Charlie Wu, both in the Harbor. You can figure out the rest of the missions on your own, I wont spoil it for you.
This game is excellent for teens of all ages. The graphics are awesome, as is the interactive features between the characters. The sounds and music are top notch, something I have come to expect from D3 Publishers. My only critique of the game would be the fact that you can only save them game at the end of an entire mission. Since some of the missions take a long time to complete, with MULTIPLE do-overs, it is a bit frustrating not to be able to save the game at your current position. That aside, Flushed Away is a fun, entertaining and hilarious game that challenges you at every step while making you laugh. I highly recommend you give it a try. Well, back to Roddy and the Jammy Dodger ..
