The Hovercraft Of Mowers

Written: Dec 01 '00 (Updated Dec 07 '00)
Pros:light, quiet, perfect for small yards
Cons:no grass catcher on this model

My dad first bought a Flymo lawnmower during the mid-1980s. We had recently moved into a new house with a huge back yard. However, the one problem mowing the lawn lay in the front yard. It was very, very steep. Bearing this in mind dad decided we needed a new lawnmower. Our old two-stroke, petrol-guzzling Victa just wouldn't do. It was noisy, heavy, and if it was accidentally released, somebody or something could have been hurt or damaged.

About a week after moving dad brought home a Flymo. He told us that they were popular overseas, particularly in Britain, where most people have small yards. He told us that it was powered by electricity, was light and quiet, and perfect for mowing our acutely angled front yard.

Over the next few years I used the mower regularly. With a conventional mower you march up and down in a straight line. While you can also do this with a Flymo, it is not recommended. Should you use it this fashion you increase the chance of running over the extension cord, and therefore electrocuting yourself. The preferred action is to swivel the Flymo from side to side.

Earlier this year I bought a Flymo Micro Lite. As the name suggests this mower is small and light. Since I live in a house with a little courtyard, there was absolutely no need to buy a larger model. While I was making a decision on what type of mower I was going to purchase, I came to the conclusion that it was between a Flymo and an old-fashioned, human-powered mower with rotating blades. Since they were quite close in value there was really only one option.

Powered by electricity I can mow the yard in a matter of minutes. The main drawback is that this model does not have a grass-catcher, however, Flymo do have mowers with this function. Avoiding the extension cord while mowing can sometimes be a hassle, but this can easily be solved by ensuring that it always remains behind you. Moreover, because all Flymo models hover on an air cushion, the chances of running over the cord and being electrocuted are reduced. I should point out that I have never tested this idea.

The Flymo Micro Lite is a great mower. If you hate the noisy, heavy, and unwieldy two and four stroke varieties, then you should consider buying a Flymo. If your yard is small, or is positioned on a steep-incline, then purchasing this is a wise decision. They are very light, much quieter, and can be stored on a hook in your garage or workshop. Having used them over a number of years I wouldn't consider using anything else.
