dlockeretz's Full Review: Ann Marie Brown - Foghorn Outdoors Easy Hiking in ...
I credit this book with rekindlng my love of hiking and the outdoors. Growing up in the northeast, I was fortunate to be able to go on several hiking, backpacking and camping trips each year, but when I moved to the Los Angeles area, somehow all that got lost in the shuffle of my career and social life.
However, when I decided to try to get off the beaten path a little, "Easy Hiking" was my bible. Whether you are a resident like me who wants to explore a little of the tremendously varied back country behind the fringes of San Diego and Los Angeles or a visitor who wants an alternative to the tourist-heavy attractions, this book will help immensely.
Ann Marie Brown covers the coastline from San Luis Obispo to San Diego, as well as Sequoia, Death Valley and Joshua Tree. The hikes described in this book go along beaches, up mountains, around lakes, through historic sites such as California missions, visit unusual rock formations such as Vasquez Rocks, immortalized in "The Flintstones", waterfalls, and more. Each hike includes helpful details such as best time of the year to visit, appoximate mileage and hike time, directions, difficulty and more. Some of the hikes are basically just strolls, while others might serve well as steps toward more ambitious trips.
I owe a lot to this book, and I hope that the trips described will inspire you as they have me.
