Pros: Creamy, tasty, can be drunk hot or iced.
Cons: Fresh-brewed cappuccino is richer in taste and texture, but this is a decent substitute.
Every once in a while, a nice cup of cappuccino really hits the spot and tickles the taste buds. But not all of us have cappuccino makers. So, the next best thing is Folgers Cappuccino. I purchased the mocha chocolate flavor. Though its not as rich and satisfying as a fresh-brewed cappuccino, it is tasty.
Quick and Easy
The cappuccino is an instant coffee blend. It can be made in two ways: iced and hot. The steps to make either are simple:
Iced place 4 ounces of milk or water in a blender, add 3 tablespoons of the cappuccino mix, add 4 ice cubes, and blend until frothy
Hot place 3 tablespoons of the cappuccino mix in a mug and add 6 to 8 ounces of hot water
The cold drink is thick and tasty. I prefer it with milk, because it results in a thicker drink. I also found that using 3 ice cubes instead of 4 strengthens the taste, and gives the drink a smoother consistency. If you want to go all-out, you can add whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg.
The hot version has a smooth, creamy texture with no bite. Though the instructions direct water for a hot cup of cappuccino, I prefer half 1% milk and half water it really increases the creaminess.
The hot drink doesnt froth up the way fresh-brewed cappuccino does, even though the picture on the container leads one to believe that. Froth is one of the fun parts about drinking cappuccino, so it youre a stickler for the real stuff, you might not be completely satisfied with the texture.
Comparing the two, I prefer the hot version. Somehow, the taste is more intense when the drink is heated. Speaking of which
Folgers Mocha Chocolate Cappuccino is sweet, so if you like your coffee without sugar, this might not suite your palette. I was able to taste both the cappuccino and the mild mocha flavors. Neither is overpowering its a nice blend. I did detect a slight aftertaste, but its not anything unpleasant more like the nutty flavor of the cappuccino.
I would not, however, say that this matches the taste of a cup of fresh-brewed cappuccino. It doesnt have the same richness or kick to it. I found that it takes heaping (not level) tablespoons to achieve a satisfying taste. Of course, when you use more of the mix, you get more than the 90 calories per cup noted on the label.
Folgers Cappuccino comes in a French vanilla flavoring as well as the mocha chocolate. I havent tasted the French vanilla, but I like the chocolate mocha enough to try the vanilla. Besides, vanilla is one of my favorite flavors.
The mix comes in 16-ounce containers that can be bought in 6-packs at high-volume retail outlets for $20 or more. However, most grocery stores carry individual 16-ounce containers for slightly over $3 each. The 16-ounce container yields about 23 servings, as long as you use level tablespoons.
There doesnt appear to be a decaffeinated version of the instant cappuccino. Contents include instant coffee, sugar, nonfat dry milk, processed cocoa, sodium, and artificial flavors, along with a good number of additives and preservatives (yuk). In addition to the 90 calories, each 3-tablespoon serving includes 2.5 grams of fat, 95 mg of sodium, 15 grams of carbohydrates, and 1 gram of protein.
Folgers Mocha Chocolate Cappuccino isnt a drink that I would make every day. Its a good treat now and then. Its a nice substitute for a real cup of fresh-brewed cappuccino. Its tasty enough to satisfy a craving, and its quick and easy to make.
