shopaholic_man's Full Review: Folgers Gourmet Selections, Creme Brulee Ground Co...
I love coffee. I have been trying Folgers Gourmet Selections lately, and the kind I tried this morning is Folgers Gourmet Creme Brulee Ground Coffee.
The Package
Unike the other gourmet brands, the bags glossy top isn't the same color as the flavor. I'm not sure what color creme brulee is, but I am sure it's not bright purple. The bag is a two tone glossy finish in gold with a bright purple colored upper half. The other gourmet coffees have a caramel color for caramel drizzle a silver color for vanilla biscotti and a rich brown color for chocolate truffle. Each bag contains 12 ounces. Most stores sell these individually, my local Shaw's Supermarket sells the Folgers Gourmet coffee for $5.99 to $7.99, depending on what's on sale that week. I picked up two new flavors because it was on sale. (see my Chocolate Truffle review too) The bag is sealed shut, and when you open it, a thick twisty thing is on the top that allows you to fold the bag top shut and seal it shut, thus keeping your coffee grounds fresh.
The bag promises the coffee to be sweet creamy vanilla flavor with a sprinkle of caramelized flavor. I did notice that barely legible in an almost identical gold print to the section of the package it was printed on that Creme Brulee is also artificially flavored. The bag also shows a best by date. I purchased mine in June of 2008, the best by date is 12/08.
Opening the Bag
I really couldn't smell anything sweet, just the faint smell of coffee. Some coffees, you can really smell the flavor of the ground or whole beans. This isn't one of those.
Brewing
Brewing is easy, like most coffees, Folgers recommends one table spoon for every 6 ounces of water. 4 Tablespoons and 24 ounces of water will give you two hardy 12 ounce cups of coffee! Again, I didn't really notice any pleasant aroma as this coffee brewed.
Taste
If I concentrated, I could taste a very mild vanilla, not as strong as Folgers own Vanilla Biscotti or as strong as Dunkin' Donuts French Vanilla though. I really could not taste the caramel in this coffee. Overall, this was a medium to light bodied coffee with a slightly sweet taste. Folgers Creme Brulee does not have an acidy taste or any bitter aftertaste.
Summary
This is actually rather bland compared to the other Folgers Gourmet coffee. I love the dessert Creme Brulee, and I was surprised that the flavor of this coffee didn't seem to come through on this. Nevertheless, it is a very pleasant tasting coffee, so I still think it is good and gave it three stars.
