Since I live on the other side of the country from Portland I have only been able to go to Fong Chong's for Dim Sum twice. Both times have been a mouth watering experience and every time I am in Portland I eagerly anticipate my next visit to Fong Chong's.
In the past year I have also had Dim Sum in Toronto, Washington D.C., and Tampa Bay; the restaurants I've been to don't even compare to Fong Chong's (but the restaurant in Tampa Bay does come very close). Reading tennis_player's review of Fong Chong's I realize that I have been lucky to not have the experience of eating there on an "off day". Tennis_Player also gives a wonderful history of the restaurant, deli, and a very accurate description of the Dim Sum experience.
I once heard Fong Chong's being described as having the best dim sum North of San Francisco and South of Vancouver. I personally consider Fong Chong's Dim Sum the best I've had, period. If I find Dim Sum that is better than Fong Chong's than I can't even begin to imagine how good it will be!
The thing I love most about Fong Chong's is the hustle and bustle of the place, it is very warm and familiar. If I had come to Fong Chong's off of the street, it's hole in the wall appearance would probably deter me from eating there, but I now realize I could care less what the place looks like as long as it is clean and the food is good!
My favorite Dim Sum dish would have to be the Lotus Balls. I have had Lotus Balls at a few different restaurants but Fong Chong's have the best flavor and consistency. The BBQ Pork Dumplings are wonderful as are the Shrimp Balls.
Fong Chong's is a great place to bring a large group of people, you are able to order a large quantity of food and still have money left over to go shopping at The Saturday Market. There are large tables with Lazy Susans, upstairs, that can easily seat a group of 10 to 12 people.
I would definitely recommend making reservations for Dim Sum at Fong Chong's. Both times I have been there were on the weekend and they were doing a brisk business, it was very rare to see an empty table.
I encourage anyone who has never had Dim Sum to give it a try, the variety is wonderful and the cart service is an experience that is unforgettable. If you happen to be in the Portland area you should definitely stop by Fong Chong's, it is well worth the time!
