I got my first box of Ezekiel 4:9 Sprouted Grain Cereal Original to use in a recipe that I ended up not making so I had a whole box to eat as cereal.   At first it was a real chore to eat but with time and experimentation, it turned out to be a very delightful cereal. 

Most cereals in the cereal aisle are packed with 13g of sugar per bowl but this one is 0g of sugar.  Before you get excited, I must say this could use a little sweetness and a touch of fruit is a perfect solution.  Going from eating regular processed cereal for decades to a bowl of this is like eating a bowl of bark for breakfast.  It took awhile before my taste buds were ready for this.  Like a bowl of oatmeal, this cereal needs some finishing touches to be delicious.   

This is a great cereal because it can be eaten a variety of ways.  It is super dry and crunchy so the liquid initially repels off of the cereal.  If I let it sit a bit it softens up and tastes a little better.  I tried it with traditional milk which I thought was the worse paring ever.  I have tried it sprinkled on yogurt in place of granola, or with fruit.  I liked it better with almond or soy milk and absolutely loved it with coconut milk (refrigerated, not in the can). It is perfect warmed in the microwave.  I put ½ cup of the cereal with ½ cup of the coconut milk and microwave it for a minute.  I then add a few berries and it tastes even better than oatmeal.  Honey and almonds or cinnamon and raisins are other nice parings.  Pretty much anything you’d add to oatmeal would work in this too.  Since the product is so neutral in flavor it could be added to other cereals or bake goods. 

This was perhaps the most expensive cereal on the shelf ringing in at $6.36 for a small box.  If this isn’t in the cereal aisle, it can be found in the organic section of the grocery.  The longevity of foods without preservatives tends to not last as long and this product is no exception.  My box expired 6 months from the purchase date.  

The box is tiny, but still has 16 ounces (8 servings) per box.  The serving size is ½ cup which looks really measly in a bowl compared to traditional cereal.  All said and done, I can barely finish a ½ cup because it is very filling.  I do measure this out because the cereal does have 6g of fiber (24% for the day).  That’s a lot of fiber all at once and may take some time to get use to.  A serving also has 8g of protein so it’s a sensational choice for breakfast. 

This isn’t the best tasting cereal in the world, but the nutritional benefits are outstanding and it’s a really quick breakfast to fix that curbs my appetite for a long time.
