A review of "Food for Life" How the New Four Food Groups Can Save your Life. by Neal Barnard, M.D.
I was discussing with my dear friend, what to do about my diabetic husbands' health issues. She told me to read this book "Food for Life". Considering how desperate I was for help, I ordered this book from Amazon, right away.
There is a foreward written by Dr. Dean Ornish, a very famous doctor, in the University of California, San Francisco. He writes that Dr. Barnard has been educating people of the health benefits in improving their diets and of his recommendation of this book.
In the introduction to this book, Dr. Barnard points how food plays a major role in ones health. Centering ones diet on the "New Four Food Groups" which is based on Grains, Legumes, Vegetables, and Fruits, will reduce ones fat intake and increases fiber, complex carbohydrates, beta-carotene, and other important nutrients. Meat and Dairy forego their food group status. This book was written for people who are healthy and want to stay that way and for those who are dealing with health issues.
Did you know that the growing of crops for direct human consumption is much more efficient than using grains and/or legumes to fatten up livestock? About 20 years ago, Scientific American, reported that producing a pound of bacon needs 10 times as much crop land as is used to make the the same amount of soybeans for human consumption.
Growing of feed crops for animals means more land is needed, water, pesticides, and chemicals that add up to more environmental problems.
Dr. Barnard goes through every concieveable illness and how their root stems from the current diet of all forms of animal protein, including fish. He proves a person can get adequate nutrition through a varied diet of the new four food groups, Vegetables, fruit, legumes, and whole grains. He also says excercise is important. By following this lifestyle and with exercise, you will do yourself a huge favor to have improved health in all aspects of your life.
Dr. Barnard goes through all the negatives of eating meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products. For examples, Insulin-dependent is linked to dairy products. Studies of various countries show a strong correlation between the use of dairy products and the incidence of insulin-dependent diabetes. Confirmatory research has shown that antibodies to cow's milk destroy the insulin producing cells of the body. That is one example of the 10 he gives to avoid Dairy.
Dr. Barnard gives suggestions on what to eat when going out or when invited to a dinner party.
The recipes given in Chapter. 8 are very easy to prepare and do not need exotic ingredients. He also gives suggestions for the cooking preparation of grains and beans. He also gives insightful advice on what to stock in your fridge and pantry. He also give ideas for transition foods like brands of vegetarian burgers and hot dogs. He gives ideas for replacing eggs, milk, and cheese in recipes. Dr Barnard shows how these recommendations can easily be put into practice.
One last word.
I must say I have been very impressed by what I have read. Though this book was printed in 1993, I am not sure why people do not refer to this so much. I gave this book to my husband to read. My husband is a huge meat eater. He loves steaks, burgers, eggs, and fish. After he read this book, he was convinced. I am so impressed that he stuck to it. I know it is difficult for him. but he wants to do the best for himself. Borrow or buy this book and read it. if you are not convinced of all the good reasons Doctor Barnard gives to go vegan, then please let me know. I do not advocate PETA. I advocate better health for all.
