| lwg76's Full Review: Forty Carrots |
I have been a fan of Forty Carrots ever since I was a kid, when my mother used to take me there as a treat during shopping excursions. Forty Carrots is a little restaurant nestled in the basement level of Bloomingdale's. While I'm sure that most people consider Bloomingdale's the main event of the trip to 59th and Lex, with a stop off at 40 Carrots as an afterthought, I am the reverse. I go there just to go to 40 Carrots, and then maybe while I'm there I'll swing by a clothing department of makeup counter, but maybe not.
The atmosphere at 40 Carrots is cozy. There is a row of seating along the counter, as well as table seating. Whichever area you wind up in, expect to hear tidbits of your neighbors' conversations, which to me is part of the fun: the people watching forced by the close proximity of seating. This is a place where you can go with somebody or you can go by yourself and feel comfortable either way.
But onto the food! The food at 40 Carrots is mostly of the healthy type. They offer soups, salads, and sandwiches. The salads and sandwiches consist of different combinations of chicken or tuna, vegetables, and come with very tasty dressings. The portions are generous, so you might want to share. My favorite is the chicken salad sandwich, which consists of chicken, shredded carrots and raisins over lettuce with a wonderful dressing. But what I consider the highlight of eating here is not the main dishes but the frozen yogurt, so save room! Or skip the sandwich and just have the dessert.
The pinnacle of your 40 Carrots dining experience is the plain frozen yogurt. Now they do have other flavors, like chocolate or coffee, but these are no different then what you would get elsewhere. The plain flavor, on the other hand, is amazing, and I have never found it anywhere else. I don't like plain yogurt, but this plain frozen yogurt has a perfect taste combination of sweet with a little bit of tang. They have many toppings, such as fresh fruit, carob chips, granola, wheat germ, melba sauce. I always get mine with wheat germ, but don't worry too much about the topping because it is the yogurt itself that is to die for. They used to only offer two sizes, regular and large, both which are huge (and good for sharing), but now they also offer a small size, which in my opinion is too tiny and will only leave you wanting more.
My recommendation is to come here with a friend, split a sandwich or salad, and then each get your own plain frozen yogurt! Once you've tried it you will be hooked.
The restaurant can get fairly busy, but I have never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a table. If you are in a huge rush they also have a take out counter where you can get your food to go. The service has always been quick, and with your check they bring you free mint sticks dipped in chocolate in a silver wrapping, which I like to stash in my purse for a treat later on. Also while the restaurant is easy enough to find, it can be tricky finding your way to the up escalator- just ask to avoid extra wandering time.
