| s_trimble's Full Review: Fossil Unisex Philippe Starck - Curved LCD - Black... |
I'm kind of a watch nerd. I've always loved to wear wristwatches, and I probably buy more of them than I strictly need. Fossil became my favorite brand when my then-girlfriend bought me one for Christmas in 1999. Since then, I've bought approximately a dozen Fossil watches.
This one is my favorite. As my friend at work said, it's the "sports car" of watches. It's black and elegant, with a curved LCD display and black PVC band. It's a negative display, meaning that the crystal is black and the LCD numbers white, rather than the other way around. It has the coolest buckle I've ever seen--you can't really tell how it attaches unless you look underneath the band. I think they call it a "deployant buckle." On the coolness factor scale, it's a solid nine.
As you can see in the picture, the numbers stack on top of one another. What you can't see is that several pieces of information scroll across the bottom of the display: A.M./P.M.; Day; Date; Year; Alarm On/Off; Home City Selected.
The watch is a little short on digital functionality; that is, it doesn't have a chronometer or a timer, just an alarm. It can be set to 12 or 24 hour time, and also has several different ways of displaying the time, including an analog-like display and a vertical display. It also can be set to display the time in several different world time zones. It has a very cool Indiglo-type light up function that makes the display light up blue for a few seconds. It's completely visible at night.
Controlling the watch's functions can be a bit tricky--the function buttons are contained in the PVC band just below the crystal itself. It's a four-way toggle like you might see on a cellphone. It's not easy to see in the dark and it's not easy to control in any case. Couple that with the instruction manual--which doesn't include instructions for this particular watch, only the other Fossil/Philippe Starck models--and you might take a little time with this watch out of the box before you're ready to wear it and wow the ladies. Also, if you have a small wrist, beware. I have a large wrist, and the band is almost too big for me. You can adjust the length, but that involves removing part of the buckle and physically cutting the band to size, and I'm loath to do that.
But all that aside, this is easily the coolest watch I've ever owned (with the possible exception of my Fossil Chinese Tic laser crystal--that one was awesome). I would highly recommend it to any guy who likes watches or who thinks a watch should be more than just a timepiece.
