| gaelkm's Full Review: Four Points Sheraton Bakersfield |
We had a mini-family get together over the weekend when one of my sisters announced she would be coming through Bakersfield. My other sister, parents and I decided to also meet there since we were both near enough. We don't often get to see our third sister, so drove the couple hours to get to "B-field", as we fondly refer to it.
One sister had reservations at the Four Points Sheraton in Bakersfield, so we did the same. The Four Points Sheraton is an oasis in Bakersfield. For those located outside of California, Bakersfield in located in the San Joaquin Valley in Central California. Bakersfield has grown in recent years to become quite a large city (population approximately 400,000) and has been known for its farming, but now more for gas/oil. It is also one of the hottest cities I've spent time in. Normal summer temperatures can be over well 100 degrees for a couple of months at a stretch (but its a ~dry heat~).
Going to the Four Points Sheraton in mid-September, though, was perfect timing. The extreme temperatures have broken and for the past two weeks they have been down to the acceptable 80's. Also, the summer vacation crowd is gone, so the hotel was not overly crowded. (There was one wedding going on while we were here and an anniversary party as well, so the hotel was busy enough.)
The lobby has a specious, open feeling. The check-in desk is off at the left of the lobby, while at the right side is a "sample bed" on display to show the good quality sleep you will get here. Near there is a huge corner window, also in the lobby, which lets in tons of sunlight. A continental breakfast is offered to guests in the lobby too. (The continental breakfast consists of rolls, danish, coffee, tea and juice.) The staff has wasted no time in preparing for autumn, because I noticed orange and yellow fall leaf decorations placed alongside pumpkins to decorate the area. In one corner is a "business center" which is a computer for guests to use, no privacy at all, but it is there for the using. The flooring is shiny terra cotta tiles. Just off the lobby is a "store" which is the latest thing. They are actually just large vending machines, which cater to traveler's needs with all kinds of things you can use while away from home, including band-aids, snacks, and other sundries. A large attractive stained glass window near an atrium was just down the hall from the lobby.
The hotel property is large place too, with the Bistro Restaurant located adjacent (but not connected) via a short walk from the lobby. The parking lot is quite ample, with free parking all around. There are also several other restaurants within a short walk or drive in this area.
There are lovely gardens and when I said the Four Points Sheraton is an oasis, I meant it. Surrounding the neighborhood are restaurants and business parks. One street nearby is Commerce Center Drive. My sisters and I walked around to see the grounds and I must say it is lovely, maybe one of the loveliest hotel grounds I have seen in quite a while. To access the sparkling pool and spa in the back courtyard, you walk down three steps. It is surrounded by brightly-colored bougainvillea and other plants on trellises, but there is actually a walkway, a couple of small ponds, a wooden bridge and a gazebo to stroll near. Since our weather was perfect with cool breezes, we really took advantage of enjoying some time outdoors. Mature trees and green lawn completed the impeccably maintained grounds. I could hardly believe I was in Bakersfield actually.
Our first floor rooms were equally wonderful. The first thing we commented on was how large the rooms were. I did a rough measurement and they were approximately 18 feet long by 14 feet wide. The decor was beautiful with subtle colors of mossy green carpeting and textured wallpaper with a contrasting border print at the top next to the ceiling. The bedspreads were duvets of a soft taupe (or tan) color. We also had a big comfy chair with an ottoman near the sliding glass window (which overlooked the tranquil pool) and a long, narrow desk with lawyers lamp. The sliding glass window has an elegant wide curtain box cover at the top. The television cabinet was a shiny dark wood with gold handles, which matched the headboards and separate dresser. Framed artwork of impressionistic style hung above the beds. I noticed that the carpeting was carried up the wall by about 6 inches, which many nicer hotels do to protect their walls instead of using floorboards.
The bathroom was spacious as well, with much appreciated amenities for guests, such as hair dryer, shampoos, and lotion. The shower has excellent water pressure. A phone located next to the toilet was there for those important calls. The counter top is marble and tile floor is white.
