| BeastieGirl's Full Review: Four Points Sheraton Bakersfield |
Being a die-hard Starwood Hotel fan, when I had several trips planned to Bakersfield, CA, I went to the spg.com website without a doubt. I booked myself into the Four Points by Sheraton in Bakersfield and figured even at its worst, the Four Points brand earns me reward points. Although this wasn’t the best Starwood property experience that I have ever had, it provided me with a clean and comfortable stay at a very reasonable price.
Located in more of a business area of Bakersfield, I liked the location, as it was in a newer part of the city and definitely felt safer than somewhere directly off of the highway. Several restaurants were within a five minute drive and it was easy to find from the freeway, although not right next to it. There was a restaurant associated with the hotel, The Bistro, which also had a lounge that appeared to be locally advertised as well.
When I pulled into the hotel, there was an awning, but no real place to park while checking into the hotel. There were several separate buildings that had guest rooms and the lobby, which was connected to meeting rooms and a wing of guest rooms as well. The lobby was brightly colored and was very inviting, but without having the restaurant or lounge attached to it, I found no reason to stick around after checking in.
The check in process was fine, I had no troubles with my reservation and the staff seemed pretty friendly and helpful. The second time I checked in, the staff was a little slow, but overall, I had no major issues and was sent on my way to my room, which happened to be located in a separate building, next to the lobby.
The property was in a square format, with buildings surrounding a courtyard that looked pleasant enough, however in the summer heat of Bakersfield, I did not find it to be overly appealing. An outdoor pool was barely visible from my room, but there were plenty of chairs and a few tables, which made it pretty inviting, as it was clean and clear. The fitness room was located nearby and was also clean and everything appeared to be in working condition. A business center was located inside of the lobby building and a computer with Internet access in the lobby was available (great for printing out boarding passes!).
The Four Points Bakersfield hotel was just completing a renovation of the entire property, including upgrades for the guest rooms. With brightly colored accents that were similar to the lobby, I found everything to be a comfort and appealing. There was a new flat screen television, about 42 inches or so, that had pay-per-view movies and guest check out (which I used so I wouldn’t have to go back to the lobby building just to check out). There was one complimentary water bottle in the room, but when I found myself more thirsty, I couldn’t find a soda machine anywhere. I ended up going to the lobby to get an expensive flavored water which didn’t really suit my tastes.
The bed was comfortable, with a pillow top mattress that was okay, but not over the top. I had a double room for both of my stays, even though I requested a King. The beds each had two large pillows, perfect for propping up and reading, with a newer looking duvet cover on the bed. A desk with good lighting was set up with wired and wireless Internet access (all free!).
The bathroom had a curved shower curtain rod, something I really appreciate and lovely Lemon Verbena soaps and lotions. The towels looked like they might have been the last thing the hotel planned on updating, as they were definitely thin and worn, which was a little disappointing, especially after everything else in the room was so new. My room overlooked the courtyard, as I mentioned, but rooms on the other side would have had a lovely view of the parking lot, just be forewarned!!
Parking was ample and keycard access was required to enter into the buildings (except for the lobby). The first time I stayed at the Four Points Bakersfield, the key access didn’t work- the doors didn’t seem to lock at all. I didn’t like that too much, but the second time I stayed here, the security was much better.
Overall, I would recommend staying here at the Four Points Bakersfield hotel. It was a comfortable stay for under $100 per night. While the service levels could have been a little better, it suited my needs as a full service hotel, with activities, a business center and a restaurant with room service. For the price paid, I would say that I definitely got what I paid for.
