Don't think for a minute that you have to tuck your pumpkin cookie cutters away! Thanksgiving is a great time to whip up some pumpkin flavored cookies but if you think that's all you can do with this, you are in for a rude awakening. I do have to say this, there's nothing all that spectacular about this cookie cutter; it's got the basic pumpkin shape, is a little less than an inch deep and is made of metal. So why do I love using this? I'm convinced that it simply can't be destroyed. It's been with me for at least four years and has been shoved in the back of the silverware drawer, tossed around in a box when we moved, kicked around when it's been dropped off the table and even been used to trace out pumpkins for greeting cards and the thing simply won't break, bend, warp or rust. That is rare for any type of metal cookie cutter; most of them last about a year and need to be pitched [or recycled for crafts] so this one is a cut above the rest [no pun intended].
Fox Run Pumpkin Cookie Cutter
This is your average two inch wide pumpkin shaped cookie cutter; because it is almost an inch deep you can use it for cutting into sandwiches [or sandwitches for Halloween], soft brownies, Jell-O, bread and even ice cream if you slide it thin enough. I won't lie, this has had a few small bends in it but they were easily fixed with my bare hands [no tools required]. The bottom part of the cutter doesn't have a sharp edge to it but it does cut through dough and food with ease. Avoid cutting into anything with nuts or hard items as it will dent the cutting edge. If you are going to use this for brownies, make sure they are still slightly warm so you don't have to press hard. About the only downside to this is that when you are pressing down you get a pumpkin imprint on your hand; you can avoid this by using a small block of wood or book so you are pressing evenly and will get perfect pumpkins each and every time.
One thing that I love about the open end metal cutters like this is you can have your dough or food as thick or thin as you like. Cutting through sliced bread with this is a complete breeze but the pumpkin stem can get a little bent out of shape so I suggest that you toast the bread first. This is a nice thing to have to make accents for pumpkin soup; toast the bread then use this cutter to cut out the shape and have the bread in a basket near the soup. I have owned a lot of pumpkin cookie cutters over the years and outside of the oversize Wilton Comfort Grip Pumpkin Cookie Cutter, this one is my absolute favorite. Why? It is easy to clean up, the seams have never split and it hasn't shown any rust on the seams. Oh, and the best part, these cost .50 cents or less so if they do get destroyed by the kids, it's not a huge loss. You may have to hunt around for them though; grocery stores usually have them in a huge cardboard display box that gets rifled through as soon as they are on sale.
The Bottom Line
You know, as much as I love Wilton and their product, so far they haven't been able to make a great basic pumpkin shaped cookie cutter that I love working with. Either they lack a true pumpkin shape or the stem is too small but thankfully Fox Run filled my cookie cutter void with this one. It is safe for kids to use but I'd still have an adult present because you never know when they are going to get a little crazy in the kitchen. This washes up nicely, presses out a really nice shape and can be used for more than just making cookies. If you are shopping for a great pumpkin cutter, give this Fox Run one a try!
As always, thanks for the visit
