NOTE: as with many of the items I review in this category the items are not toys per se, rather these are resources produced by an education, school, instruction centered publisher; and are classroom type materials intended for use with primary and older age students in both public school or home school setting as well as for use by parents who are working to help their children with learning content areas.

Frank Schaffer Publications Learning Game Short and Long Vowels is actually a series of 4 brightly colored boards featuring child friendly graphics, easy use materials and allowing 4 games to be played to help reinforce instruction pertaining to vowels and vowel sounds.
These stimulating games are designed to offer Little Learners an inimitable process for strengthening language skills, taking turns, using learning materials effectively and working with a partner.
Each particular set is comprised of a multi hued 9.5 x 17.5 inch child pleasing game board and the various pieces including playing cards, directions, game tokens or markers needed for playing the game to highlight a specific skill. Game cards are child sized, brightly colored, show a picture, ask a question or otherwise provide Little Players with opportunity to use their decoding skills in order to move token, markers or game pieces along the progression from Start position to the Finish.
As an instructional lesson finale I often make use of flash cards, small puzzles, games and other short period activities designed to permit Little Learners some time to wind down from the instruction segment of the action, to have the benefit of a few minutes of partner, or small group exertion during which the particular curricular activity is reinforced and or set the stage for the individual work designed to further reinforce the concept as well as provide myself data per whether or not each student has actually understood and is now internalizing the information. This set of Frank Schaffer 4 small game boards are just the thing for such in room instructional follow up work.
I enjoy watching and listening as Little Learners adapt the actual rules for the games to their own playing skill level and understanding; most times both children are delighted when the game ends and both are the winner. Older kids like to play games to win, Little People like to play games with friends so that both can win.
Long and short sounds for a, e, o is emphasized on the yellow board featuring Jack and Jill while sounds for a, u and i are addressed on the meadow scene board labeled Mary Had a Little Lam. Humpty Dumpty board shows the egg taking a tumble from a red wall onto green grass: sounds portrayed are long and short i and a. I, a, and u are featured on the pink board titled The Cat and the Fiddle.
Upon using the 4 game boards, Little Learners will have gained practice across a broad spectrum of language arts skill area. Research notes that instruction followed by reinforcement activities, especially reinforcement activities during which students are provided interesting, enjoyable and even entertaining periods leads to greater retention, understanding and actual inculcated learning taking place.
Frank Schaffer Publications Learning Game Short and Long Vowels materials consists of all equipment for playing each of the four games including; four bright and interest piquing game boards, directions, game pieces, ie tokens, markers or indicators and playing cards.
Phonics, decoding skills, is made easier for Little Learners re gaining knowledge whilst concrete, well planned instruction is united with wittiness, enjoyment and agreeable activity.
Happy to recommend Frank Schaffer Publications Learning Game Short and Long Vowels.
