Do you like steak?
If you do and youre in the vicinity of the Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island, you should go and have a meal at Fred and Steves Steakhouse.
Okay, I admit it, I didnt know what to expect as I was looking at the menu outside the restaurant, but I did know there was a lot of beef on the menu. When we went in and I realized that there really are two restaurants here. The first, and the part you walk into from the casino is the lounge. Theres a bar here and booths around the perimeter. This section has its own menu thats distinctly more pub-like than the dining room.
The dining room on the other handy is a fancier affair. They offer a more extensive (and expensive) menu that includes just about any kind of steak you could imagine. Seriously, theres a lot to choose from.
Ambiance, Décor and Service
The restaurant namesakes, Fred Smerlas and Steve DeOssie are two pro-football players who have partnered up to open this restaurant. Both in the lounge and in the dining room, theres a mix of football memorabilia. For me, thats not so interesting, but Im sure for others, its probably pretty cool.
Both portions of the restaurant have a fairly simple design. There are lots of blacks, lots of clean lines and decent lighting, especially over the tables. The seats are very comfortable and in general, its just a nice place to relax and enjoy your meal.
Service is very good. We were quickly greeted upon entering and after choosing to have our meal in the dining room, we were quickly seated. We had several different members of the wait staff visit our table in quick succession, offering drinks, taking our order and bringing out bread. Throughout the night the service was just great, with our meals well paced and the wait staff checking in to make sure everything was okay. I was really impressed overall with the entire experience.
The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor of Twin River and overlooks a portion of the gaming floor thats on the 1st floor. Our table was right next to a window, so we looked right down onto the gaming floor. I thought it was kind of cool and it was a different kind of view than you are used to.
Because its on the 2nd floor and is separated from the open gaming area by glass, none of the casino sounds make it into the restaurant.
Hours
Fred and Steves is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesdays through Saturdays its open from 5pm to 11pm and on Sundays they open at 4pm and close at 8pm.
Menu
Steak, steak, steak
Oh there are a few other things, but you come to this restaurant to eat some beef.
The menu does have a selection of hot and cold appetizers which tends to be more heavily related to seafood. Nothing really grabbed our attention here, so we just skipped the appetizers.
Instead, my partner got the clam chowder and was completely wowed by it. Im not a chowder fan, but he raved about it. There are also other soups available. The portion size is quite large the bowl of chowder was practically a meal by itself.
There are several different salads and if I had been going for a lighter meal, I might have considered at least getting the Caesar salad.
Oh the entrees, heres where the steak comes in. Theres filet mignon, sirloin, rib eye, prime rib, and porterhouse. Theres even a 48 ounce porterhouse for two if you think you can eat it! Both my partner and I went for the prime rib and Im sure glad that I did. When they brought it out, my first thought was oh my god, thats huge. It was huge and I had gotten the smaller cut. It was over 2 inches thick and it took up the whole plate. It was cooked perfectly too. Not only that, but when I started eating it, the meat practically melted in my mouth. It was good, I cant really say any more than that. Even my partner loved it and hes not a total steak fan.
If you dont quite feel like steak, theres also a pork or lamp chop entrée available, along with a chicken entrée. There are also a couple of different seafood entrees available.
Meals here are a-la-carte, so we got one side of the mashed potatoes to share. We had asked ahead of time and most of the sides are really sized for two people. It was suggested that we just share one. Im glad we did otherwise there would have been too much leftover, considering the size of the steak!
Im not sure how anyone can make it to dessert after their steak, but Fred and Steves does offer a quite extensive selection of desserts. I know we wanted to try some, but I couldnt have eaten another thing when we were finished.
While we didnt eat in the lounge, the menu there is less expansive (and expensive) and features more sandwiches and pub-type food.
Prices
This is a restaurant in a casino after all, so expect to spend some extra cash when you come to Fred and Steves. The entrees start around $25 and go up from there. Pretty much everything is a la carte, so the total can grow quite fast. We didnt have any alcoholic drinks and our total was around $40 per person and the prime rib was one of the least expensive steaks on the menu.
Final Thoughts
I know that if Im at Twin River again and have a hankering for a great steak, Im going to be going to Fred and Steves Steakhouse. I even sat there thinking while we were eating, who I could invite to come down with me that loved steaks and would really enjoy the place.
Im glad I stumbled onto this steak place. I know its kind of pricey, but for a special meal with some great beef, its hard not to love it.
If you like steak and dont mind the higher prices, check out Fred and Steves Steakhouse, its well worth it.
