| smaihlee's Full Review: Fresh Brush Toilet Cleaning System Refills |
I am a total cleaning products junkie. Whenever a new product appears on the grocery store shelves, I'm at the ready to try it out. Part of my obsession is in finding products that save me time, but I also love to find products that really, truly work.
The Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush Toilet Cleaning System has been around for a few years, and I started using it shortly after it first appeared in my neighborhood supermarket. I feel compelled to write a review of this product because it is one of my all-time favorite cleaning methods that has replaced what I would consider a more "traditional" method.
I'm not the most organized person on the planet, but I am a real stickler for cleanliness--especially when it comes to my bathroom. Since my home only has one bathroom, it gets a lot of use. I stay on top of cleaning it for the sake of my family's health, but also because it's the bathroom that any guests in our home will use. I've always been loathe to use a traditional toilet brush to clean the toilet bowl, but for many years it was the only option available.
Let's face it...toilet brushes are just plain NASTY. When I still used a toilet brush, after swishing it around in the clean toilet I would put it in the tub and spray it down with cleanser and hose it off with hot water before putting it back into its holder (I still do this with my plunger). Yes, I'm THAT weird. You can imagine that when I first saw Fresh Brush and read the concept, I was really psyched about how this would change my bathroom cleaning routine.
When first purchasing this product, I bought the "starter kit", which contained a handle, a hanging hook, and a package of 4 refill pads. The plastic handle comes out of the box in 2 pieces and must be assembled before using it the first time. The assembly literally only takes a couple seconds (snap it together), and then you're ready to attach a dry cleaning pad.
What sold me on the product was the fact that the cleaning pads are flushable. These multi-layer pads are about 2 inches square by 1 inch thick, and they are cut into notches at one end. The pads are made of a thick paper-like material that is impregnated with cleaning solution. The pads have a textured surface which aids in getting the bowl really clean. The pads have a very strong scent (currently "Citrus Action") but it is actually quite pleasant.
To use the product, you remove a clean pad from the resealable pouch and slip it into the clamshell end of the handle. Then you slide a button on the handle to close the end and lock the cleaning pad in place. Next, you hold the handle and dip the cleaning pad into the toilet to wet the pad and activate the cleaning solution. Your bowl water will immediately start turning blue to let you know the cleaner is being released. Now, simply clean your toilet just as you would with a regular toilet brush. The approximately 2 ft. long handle is slightly curved for ease in reaching up under the rim. When you're satisfied with the job, simply slide down the button on the handle to release the pad into the toilet, then flush.
As I mentioned, the starter kit comes with a hanging hook for the handle. The plastic hook is intended to be hung from the side of the toilet tank rim so that you can leave the handle there between cleanings. I hang my handle on the far side of my toilet, and it is not immediately noticeable to anyone who uses my bathroom.
A package of 12 refill pads regularly costs about $4.29 at my local grocery store (a little less expensive at the discount chains). However, I typically watch for the pads to go on sale, and I also utilize coupons for these when available for extra savings. Even at full price, I think the cost of the refill pads is comparable to toilet bowl cleaner (depending on the brand and how much you use).
There are other handle/disposable pad systems out there(and even another by Scrubbing Bubbles), but none of them have cleaning pads that are flushable. For me that's key...I don't like the idea of a dirty pad in my trash can any more than I like a regular toilet brush!
The package states the pads "break up like toilet paper...so they are safe for your plumbing and septic system". I am on a city sewage system, and I have never had a problem with the pads causing a backup.
While this product is a suitable and complete substitute for a traditional toilet brush and toilet bowl cleaner, I will admit that I have not stopped using toilet bowl cleaner with bleach for my weekly deep cleaning. As I mentioned earlier, I am a real stickler for a clean bathroom and I like to use bleach for a more sanitary environment. That being said, I would really love it if this product could be made with bleach built into the pad.
