| jps246's Full Review: Fresh Ketch Seafood n Steak |
I don't get to the downtown Hyannis area that often because I'm usually heading out to Provincetown, but on those occasions when I am in town, I know that no matter what the people with me like, we can usually end up getting meals that we'll all enjoy at the Fresh Ketch Seafoood-n-Steak Restaurant. It offers a fairly well rounded menu that will please both the surf and turf lovers.
Me, I'm one of those turf lovers while my partner loves the surf, so this kind of restaurant is perfect for the two of us.
Where is it?
Fresh Ketch is located along Main Street in downtown Hyannis, Massachusetts. There's limited parking along Main Street (it's usually full) and there are several public parking lots along Main Street. There's one that's not too far from the restaurant.
This is a fairly large restaurant and only during the most busy lunch and dinner rush have I seen any really long line to get a table. During good weather, there's dining both inside and outside.
Ambiance, décor and service?
I've found the staff to be attentive to our needs when I've been there. We've been seated quickly, our orders taken and the food fairly well paced between the various courses of your meal. They have checked back through our meals and kept our drinks filled and taken care of anything that we've needed.
As for ambiance and décor, I really like sitting out along the front of the restaurant. That way you can watch the world go by on Main Street. Failing that, I like the booths that face Main Street for the same reason. The rest of the restaurant isn't all that exciting, but it has a nautical, seafaring theme and fish tanks and the requisite lobster tank. The dining area isn't anything fancy, but it's not really a disappointment either.
The Menu
Like I said, there's a little bit of everything on this menu. You've got your full complement of courses including appetizers, salads, soups, entrees and deserts. For those who aren't quite so hungry, there's a sandwich section too.
Generally things tend to skew towards the seafood end of things. That's understandable consider you're on the Cape surrounded by fresh seafood. That said, while I skipped the raw bar and the seafood appetizers, I do like their potato skins, which comfortably provide enough for about 4 people. There are a couple of other landlubber choices that are good including chicken fingers and onion rings. As for the seafood there's everything you'd expect including shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, and steamers.
The soups also skew towards that seafood side and include clam chowder, lobster bisque, and seafood stew. My partner raved about the clam chowder.
Most of the entrees come with a small garden salad, however if you want something bigger, there are a couple of entree salads that are available. These include a greek salad, a lobster salad, a caesar salad and a cobb salad.
Ready for your entree? There are plenty of choices here including a ton of different seafood dishes, several pasta dishes and a number of chicken and steak entrees. I haven't run across anything people haven't liked. There's been fish and chips, chicken Mediterranean, steak tips and sirloin to name just a few. Besides the pasta dishes, the entrees are served with your choice of potato or rice and a vegetable, along with that garden salad. The pasta dishes come with just the salad. I can't say that the entrees have knocked my socks off, but what I have had has been good and besides me, some of my friends have really loved their meals.
The portion size is quite good, especially with the pasta dishes. I highly doubt you'd finish one a doggie bag almost always goes home with us.
If you aren't in the mood for a full entree, there are several different sandwiches and burgers available. I've always gone for dinner so I can't really vouch for these, but I'd imagine since the rest of the menu has been quite good, these would be no different.
We've never made it to dessert either, but they do have a full dessert menu.
There's a full compliment of beverages available including a full-service bar.
Prices
Nothing unreasonable here considering the prices of restaurants on the rest of the Cape. Expect to spend around $15 to $25 for most entrees with a few heading further up into the $30 range. With the appetizers, drinks and meals we average around $30 a person.
Final Thoughts
With good service, an extensive menu and a bit of something for everyone, Fresh Ketch is a good choice for someone looking for dinner in downtown Hyannis. I'd definitely go back again.
