Pros: Improved sleek metallic compact and thicker better puff, value price
Cons: Where's the clear plastic insert?
The Bottom Line: This compact has been a tried and true classic for me for many years. It's new and improved, and I like the changes. I've always counted on this product.
I am so brand-loyal to Cover Girl for pressed powder compacts, that I've switched brands only once in more than 15 years. There may be better compacts out there--and more expensive, too--but I've been happy-go-lucky about what I've got here. Guess I've always stuck with what I've thought was a good thing.
Cover Girl has revamped their product lineup of pressed powder compacts again...about a month ago I replenished and bought Cover Girl Fresh Look Pressed Powder. Previously I was buying Cover Girl's "Balanced" complexion version in the purple compact, for combination skin, but they've revamped and the comparable equivalent is Fresh Look.
The most obvious change--and a great improvement!--is the color of the plastic compact case to elegant, sleek, chic silver/metallic with an updated "CG" logo. I like it--I think it is so fresh and new. I've been buying silver things lately--um...a new bicycle helmet...um...a 2001 Ford Focus hatchback car...SO...I'm into it.
The other change for the better is the white puff that's included. While many makeup artists recommend to apply pressed powder with a brush rather than a puff, I've always liked using the puff. I do have to buy my own replacements when the one that's included becomes too soiled. (When you buy the replacements, also try the Victoria Vogue brand.)
The package for Cover Girl Fresh Look pressed powder mentions that it "includes special puff for combination to oily skin." I'm not sure how it is *special*, but it appears to be thicker, therefore it blots and absorbs oil better, therefore, I think it's better. It's soft, like putting a little piece of a plush white towel on your face.
The product contents of the actual powder appear to be the same for me--I really don't notice a change, and it does exactly what the package says: "Keep oil and shine at bay with this lightweight, oil free powder that lasts. Improved oil absorbers help skin look fresh and naturally beautiful. Helps make pores less visible. Won't overdry. Gentle enough for sensitive skin." All true! *Wink*
You bet, it's oil free, dermatologist tested and non-acnegenic. I've never had a blemish or breakout problem using this product. I use this product almost daily, except for when I give my face a break from cosmetics or when exercising.
One thing that I wish they kept when they redesigned was that they kept the clear plastic circular insert that lays between the puff and the powder contents as extra security that the product won't spill--or if by chance, it breaks, it won't do as much damage to things. Probably most users throw it out, but I've always kept mine inside the compact.
When I was a teenager, I went through what a lot of people go through when the compact drops and breaks. I haven't experience that for a long time. Maybe here's some reasons why...I own TWO compacts. I keep one at my vanity table, and the other one in my purse. I make sure that the one in my purse is either kept in a tight inside pocket where it can't jostle around, or in a small "Ziploc" type bag along with other things (like Altoids) that I don't want to spill--or if they do, the damage is contained to the plastic bag. When I travel, sometimes I put a small rubber band--either a regular one or a hair rubber band--around it. That little piece of elastic provides a wee bit of cushioning (try that with your blush compacts, too.)
By the way, the price was right when I bought the product. I was going to buy it at CVS for $2.99, but when I went into KMart about a month ago it was on sale for just $2.50, so that was where I bought it!
A word of caution on another topic related to Cover Girl Fresh Look: I decided to take a look at the product contents. The FIRST MAIN ingredient is TALC. This worries me. I never use body powders that contain talc. I only use body powders that contain corn starch. So this whole time, I've been putting on--and possibly breathing in--TALC! I am worried about this.
Remember when I said I only changed brands once ever? That time, I had switched for one compact of Corn Silk brand of pressed powder. Next time...I may check out the ingredients of that brand to see where talc ranks on its list of ingredients.
