| francesca57's Full Review: Fresh Milk Bath |
OK, we've all been there. You meet a guy, and this is THE ONE. Looks good, great personality, reasonably sane and no criminal record. People you know and trust tell you how wonderful he is. He asks you out on a date, and you can't wait to get to know this stud muffin/Mr. Right better. You want this to work out. You want this to be the man of your dreams. You primp and you pamper, in anticipation of great things to come. He picks you up, and somewhere between the entree and the dessert, you realize that you haven't heard a word he's said since the salad. Prince Charming, so glib and gorgeous a couple of nights ago, is a dud. Next.
OK, so now you're probably saying to yourself, "cute dating ditty, but what does this have to do with bubble bath?" Plenty, because my experience with fresh Milk Bath is not much different from a disappointing dating experience.
What is fresh?
fresh is a high-end line of beauty products, found in better department stores and specialty shops. Their products include skin care, make-up, and fragrances, all which are based on natural ingredients known for their skin care benefits. The line include products which are based on umbrian clay, rice, soy, fruit, honey, milk, and rose.
About Milk Bath
Milk has been used as a beauty product for centuries. We've all heard the stories of vain and beautiful Cleopatra, faithfully bathing in the stuff. fresh's claim is that the vitamins found in milk, A, D & E, have great hydrating qualities, and the lactic acid combats dry skin. fresh also added shea butter and glycerin, which have excellent moisturizing properties.
Milk Bath comes in five fragrances; Milk-Milk, Milk Chocolate (not the sickly, sweet smell you would expect), Jasmine Milk (slightly floral), Ivy Milk (a bit planty is the best I can describe this), and Nectarine Milk (slightly fruity).
How Milk Bath Worked
I had not heard much about fresh products until a good friend recommended their line. She was pretty new to them, but was excited about what she had used so far. The ingredients list of Milk Bath seemed to insure a great product, so I quickly paid a visit to Sephora.com to place my order. While I was waiting for delivery, I suddenly was deluged with info about fresh. I read about it in two different publications, and was recommended to it by several more people whose opinions I also trust. I also noticed that my favorite department store, Jacobson's, had begun carrying it. There I got to actually smell the products, and they were great. The packaging was also attractive, and had me even more excited to lavish myself in this bath. I couldn't wait.
The Milk Bath I had chosen, Nectarine Milk, finally arrived. Out of the box, you immediately notice the classy, but simple, packaging fresh is known for. The Milk Bath comes in a glass jar, reminiscent of the milk bottles milk once came in. The label is simple and attractive, and features Mukki the cow, fresh's symbol. Milk Bath just has the look of a great product.
I opened the bottle, and took a whiff. The smell was heaven. It is hard to explain what it smelled like, not milk or nectarine, but the smell was fresh, clean and wonderful. I couldn't wait to use it, and ran to start the bath.
I poured a couple of capfuls in, and watched as the thick, luxurious bubbles foamed up into a glorious feast for the skin. The smell initially seemed not as intense as I had hoped, but the wonderful scent was there.
I lit a couple of candles, turned on some good music, and got in the tub, anticipating a relaxing, de-stressing experience. I also expected to come out with soft skin and a light, clean scent. This was going to be the beginning of a long and special relationship.
I entered the bath, laid back, and began to soak under the bubbles. I closed my eyes deep in thought, thinking about how much I was going to like this stuff. A few minutes later, when I opened my eyes, half the bubbles were gone. And when I thought about it, so was the scent. If I put some water in my hand, and sniffed hard, I could still find a trace of it. But for the most part, it was gone. I stayed in the tub a while longer, figuring I didn't have to have bubbles to get the benefit of the skin softening ingredients. Once towel dried, I found my skin showed no signs of improvement, and in fact noticed that it felt a bit sticky.
The Price
Expensive. A 15.8 ounce bottle is $26.00.
Where You Can Buy Fresh Products
Fresh has two stores in New York City, and one in Boston. You can also purchase their products online at www.fresh.com, www.sephora.com, as well as all Sephora and Neiman Marcus Stores, and stores where top-of-the-line beauty products are sold. The website has a "stores near you" section, but it doesn't appear to be updated properly. I put in my state, and it said that there were no stores in my area that sell fresh, yet my local Jacobson's Department store carries it.
The Verdict
Like the date I mentioned earlier, fresh Milk Bath was an enormous disappointment. It looked good, it sounded good, and it came with great recommendations. I looked forward to our first date with great anticipation and promise. I really wanted to love it. I really wanted to enjoy it. I really hoped for a long and lasting relationship. But, alas, it wasn't meant to be.
I tried Milk Bath over and over again, thinking it might improve. After almost the entire bottle is gone, I have to admit total defeat.
Milk Bath failed to live up to any of its promises. And at $1.65 an ounce, I can't imagine a bigger waste of money.
