The Bottom Line: If you have a multi-cat household, and are on a budget, this is an economical, effective litter. But it is dusty and has a distinctive odor you may not like.

It's a dirty topic but all owners of indoor cats have to ponder the pros and cons of "waste/odor control". I've had plenty of experience with this topic, and use several litters due to different needs. This is the litter I use in my multi-cat boxes. Stay tuned for reviews on the litters I use with my asthmatic cat.
What is Fresh Scent Fresh Step Litter?
A clay based litter containing blue and green irregular-shaped crystals that per the package claims are activated by both moisture as well as the activity of your cats paws. Further claims are that in-between use, this litter "prevents the growth of odor-causing bacteria".
The clay is described as being extra absorbent and lighter in weight as compared to other clay litters. The litter comes in odd weights compared to other clay litters, with the package claiming that a 21 pound bag will equal your use from a 30 pound bag of another clay litter. It comes in 7, 14, 21 and 35 pound bags.
Why Use Fresh Scent Fresh Step? The Pro's
- very good odor control
- after usage, the wet litter is not as heavy as other premium or cheaper clay-based litters
- lasts longer making it more cost effective
- my cats like and will use this, as always cats are individual, so try a smaller bag to see if yours like it too
Are There Any Con's?
Unfortunately, yes.
-odor crystals have a faint chlorox odor to them which may irritate your eyes and nose when pouring into the litter box
-DUSTY! I am not exaggerating when I advise you to wear a painters mask or other device to cover your nose and mouth when emptying a bag into a clean litter pan. I further advise you have a window open or air purifier going at the time as well. I have not found this to be as much of a problem during cat usage, but it is a serious consideration when pouring into a litter box. This is not a litter that can be used, in my experience, with an asthmatic cat (yes, cats can have asthma), and you will have to see if your cat has any negative reaction to the odor, as like people, cats can have allergies and sensitivities to products.
Final Thoughts, Or Why Would You Use This Given Your Con's List?
Can I recommend this? Yes I can, if one is aware of my list of drawbacks, and handles the product with those drawbacks in mind. It will last longer than inexpensive clay litters, it is easier to dispose of due to lighter weight when wet, and it controls odor in a multi-cat box. The odor during use is not as strong as when you first pour this into the cleaned litter box, and the crystals do their job well. Made by the Chlorox Pet Products company, it is not my imagination that the "fresh scent" is similar to the odor that wafts from my Chlorox bottle!
