The Bottom Line: This product is the best I've found to control cat odors. The effectiveness of the product makes it worth the somewhat higher price. I'd recommend to others.
When we only had one cat, I wasn't that interested in finding the most effective cat litter. Just about any brand would do since the litter box was scooped often and there was no real odor problem. But since our cat family has grown substantially (more than ten), we need the best litter we can find to make sure the air in our house stays as fresh as possible.
We had always bought whatever litter was cheapest for our oldest cat, Smokey. After we found Midnight, Spike, Rocky and the rest of the gang we had to buy more litter boxes and huge amounts of litter-and the litter had to be effective. Using bargain brands made the odor around the house almost unbearable, even when we repeatedly scooped. A friend with multiple cats recommended Fresh Step Scoopable Litter with Odor Eliminating Carbon. We needed a solution fast so I picked up one of the 28-pound buckets at the supermarket. It was quite a bit higher in price ($17.99) than I was used to paying but it would be worth it if it worked.
From the beginning, I realized I was getting my money's worth with this litter. I had always put baking soda in the bottom of the litter boxes to keep the gunk that can accumulate from sticking to the bottoms, even though the instructions on the Fresh Step bucket say you should start with an empty box. After putting a layer of the baking soda in, I filled the litter boxes half full of the Fresh Step. There was no odor to the litter itself to speak of and the cats didn't seem to mind that I'd changed brands.
I was glad the cats hadn't rejected the litter and chosen to do their business someplace else but I was still a little skeptical about whether the Fresh Step would solve the odor problem. I usually scooped each box at least twice daily but for this trial I only scooped once that day, left the litter box covers off and waited to see if we'd be able to breathe the next day. To my surprise and delight, there was no odor problem. The litter boxes were filled with large, easy-to-handle clumps. It was a simple matter to just scoop out the clumps, dump in the trash and add more litter.
As I said, this litter is more expensive than we'd been used to paying but there are some other advantages to its use, besides the fact that it works. With each bucket bought, there is a small insert inside that has a code number on it and a point value. At http://www.pawpoints.com/, the codes can be entered for various cat-related rewards. I use most of our points for free Fresh Step coupons but there are other things available such as cat toys, books on cats, litter boxes, etc. Saving these points and getting the rewards softens the blow of the higher pricing. I've also found product samples inside some of the litter buckets for cat treats and cat sanitary wipes. Being a coupon user, I'm always on the lookout for Fresh Step coupons, which are usually easy to find. These coupons are often for $1 or more and also help with the cost.
I don't have any negative comments about this product since it has fulfilled the need for an effective cat odor-eliminator. I would recommend this product to any cat owner, whether there is only one cat in the house or multiple cats. The only problem I've encountered is finding something to do with all those empty buckets!
