Pros: energy star space-saving among the least expensive of its kind
Cons: quirky takes getting used to you MUST read the manual
What you need to know before buying - here is why you are seeing such mixed reviews about this machine:
About washing with this machine-
This is one of your lower-cost front loaders. One of the big attractions to the front loading models is their energy efficiency, i.e. they use less water (and soap). Since they use less water the system is not as foolproof as a top loader - the less powerful and finely tuned one of these front loaders is the more experience it takes to get used to its quirks. You really have to base this decision on money vs. convenience. Oh, and you MUST read the manual.
I have had mine for about three years now. After the first 1 - 1 1/2 years I started noticing a nasty, stale odor in my clothes after washing. To keep a long story short I will just say that I found out it was due to my use of liquid detergents (yes, they were HE) and fabric softeners. These two substances contain oily ingredients that can collect around the drum and create mildew, which seems to happen especially often in the lower cost front loaders. I ran CLR through it a couple times to get rid of the smell, and sticking to the rules of "cheap" front loaders I have had no problems since.
Apparently the rules are - stick to HE powder, no liquid fabric softener, mop out your door gasket after each wash, and leave the door cracked between uses (I hang a skirt hanger on the knob so it can't shut all the way). I am not married to fabric softener, so this is no problem for me, but I know some people have been very upset about this. I found these things out by researching many sites and reviews about this machine (when I started getting the smell).
About error messages-
The only error messages I have gotten have been for the door not being securely shut or for clogs. This model has a filter on the water intake. I have done some bathroom remodeling and other plumbing work since installing this machine and have had to remove and clean this filter each time. When you shut down your water it relieves pressure on the system and allows debris to flow in when you turn it back on. So if you get strange error messages try cleaning your filter. This will be more common if you live in the country and have a well/pump as I do.
