We try to go to San Francisco every other month or so. Since it's hard (but not impossible) not to have a good meal in the city, we try to spread our food dollars around.
One restaurant I had heard about for sometime was Fringale. I have to admit, the location looked kind of dicey, especially after dark. But, after rounding the block a couple of times, I found a parking spot right across the street.
Boy, were we ever happy we found this place. Ever go to a new restaurant, and be made to feel as if you had been a regular for years? Me neither! Yet this was exactly what happened to us at Fringale.
We started off with a selection from there very good wine list. Now I'm not a wine connoiseur, and I have found that the waitstaff at a good restaurant will generally choose a good wine if you give them parameters. We were asked what we were thinking of having for dinner. Well, this is a restaurant near the Bay, so we were thinking of seafood, naturally. We were recommended a fine white wine, the house white, from the Napa Valley.
We both started with a salad with truffles. Being so expensive, the salad was light on the truffles, but the taste, though subtle, was definitely there. We also both chose the main course of salmon, cooked with butter and herbs. Delicious!
Forget your first impression of the neighborhood. It's safe, just a bit 'South of Market', with an industrial ambiance. The warm greeting, the excellent service, and the great food make this a MUST on a trip to SF.
