Friskies Crunchy Tarter Control Cat Treats
Written: Mar 31, 2008
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Cats like the flavor, supposed tartar control benefits
Cons:Hairball remedy does not work, more expensive than regular treats
The Bottom Line: Since the Hairball Remedy didn't work, I wouldn't recommend these treats.
This is a review of Friskies Tartar Control Cat Treats with added Hairball Remedy (the middle package in the photo).
I often buy treats as a little something extra for my cats. When I saw these Friskies Tartar Control Treats with added Hairball Remedy, it seemed like a good choice. My cats typically like Friskies brand treats. The tartar control part was appealing because I do worry about their teeth. One of my cats suffers from hairballs so that seemed like a huge plus.
I fed these treats to my cats over a few weeks. They liked the treats, which are crunchy and made with real tuna. The only real complaint is that the hairball remedy didn't seem to help at all. My cat continued to have hairballs regardless of eating these. Their teeth look fine but then again, their teeth have always looked fine. I just have to assume that these treats actually help control the build up of tartar. It's hard for me to tell if there is tartar on their teeth just by looking. My cats aren't very keen on me examining their mouths!
Ingredients: Ground wheat, ground yellow corn, brewers rice, petrolatum, poultry by-product meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), animal digest, wheat gluten, tuna, tuna meal, natural and artificial flavors, salt, added color (Yellow 5 and other color), calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, choline chloride.
Active ingredient: Each 800 mg piece contains 73 mg of petrolatum.
So, the overall feeling is that this is a so-so product. The cats seem to like the taste, the tartar control aspect may or may not work, and the hairball remedy definitely did not work. I doubt I will purchase these again. I would purchase Friskies Treat or even Friskies Tartar Control Treats again, but I won't bother with the ones with added Hairball Remedy. If you look at the price comparison here on Epinions, you'll see that the ones with Hairball Remedy are nearly double the price of the treats without it. I don't see any reason to pay extra for something that doesn't work.
These treats come in a 2.5 ounce resealable pouch. I paid around $4 for the pouch I bought, at a local department store.
