Friskies Natural Sensations - Salmon flavor - a healthy treat my cat won't eat.
Written: Jan 09 '10
Pros:Intriguing package, added vitamins, cute shapes.
Cons:My kitty won't eat them.
The Bottom Line: They seem like they'd be a healthy snack for my kitty. It's a shame that he won't touch them.
What a disappointment! After the Friskies Natural Sensations chicken flavor was such a hit in my house, I assumed their "Real Salmon" flavor would be equally accepted. Especially since "Music" eats other salmon-flavored treats. But I was wrong. My kitty simply won't touch these treats. Much to my surprise, he simply walks away from these.
When I first saw the Natural Sensations line of treats, I was immediately intrigued by their packaging. The bright, foil bags talk about how their flavors are inspired by the sun, Earth, and sea. And in this case, their salmon treats contain "accents of Sunflower and Garden Veggies" and have "added vitamins & minerals".
The treats come in three cute shapes - circles, stars, and clams. These represent the Earth, the sun, and the sea, I suppose. I find them cute, but apparently the shapes aren't cute enough to gain Music's interest.
I also like that these treats contain no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. The ingredients include: chicken meal, rice, corn meal, natural flavor, salmon, dried seaweed, sunflower meal, dried carrots, dried peas, Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin B-12, and Vitamin D-3. In the guaranteed analysis, we have protein min 23%, fat min 9%, fiber max 4%, and moisture max 11%.
I don't know how much of those vitamins are in these snacks, nor do I know if cats need vitamin supplements. But my thoughts are in the "they probably won't hurt" area. Plus, I tend to trust the Purina/Friskies name. So if they think these are healthful snacks, I'll go along with them. Especially since I never use treats as meal replacements - they're simply occasional treats used to bring some joy to kitty's day, and occasionally to bribe him to come inside.
But in this case, that won't work since Music won't eat them. So, while I continue to believe this is a healthy treat for kitties, I won't be buying them again. Thankfully they're not very expensive - just a couple bucks for the 2.1 oz. bag. So what will happen to this bag? I'll go find out if my neighbor's cat will eat them.
Do I recommend this flavor and brand of treats? Yes, if your cat likes them.
