| JDinPA's Full Review: Friskies Senior Cat Food |
Two of my cats are approaching senior-hood ~ I guess they are moving out of the adult, aka middle-aged years (just don't tell them! I don't want a crisis on my hands~! lol), and will soon become "Senior" cats. Now I do not think you have to wait until that exact moment when you become "senior" to switch your foods - you can start a bit ahead of time (just like applying for social security BEFORE you actually want it to start) and ease into the whole process.
Friskies Senior has come out with a new formula. The one I bought was Lamb Meal, Rice and Barley with natural Chicory that provides 100% complete nutrition for your older cat. It actually sounds kind of tasty, and the addition of lamb to the food may actually stimulate some of those taste buds that could be dulled from the natural process of aging.
In case you are wondering just how old does a cat have to be before it is considered senior ~ it is at that magical age of 7-years. From my experience with cats, it seems that 7-years is pretty much the 1/2 way point to almost the 1/3 point in actual life expectancy. Seven years seems like a bit early to the grand scheme of things to call a cat old, or senior ~ to place them in the "gray kitties brigade." That is kind of like saying that when you hit 30 you become a senior citizen ~ don't you think we'd hear some ruckus about that one!!!!
But, back to the subject at hand ~
This Senior formula contains ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, digest of chicken by products, lamb meal, brewers rice, ground barley, fish meal, whole chicory root, and a continued list of vitamin and mineral supplements, natural and artificial flavors. The box states that it contains no artificial colors, but I guess artificial flavors are A-OK.
Crude percentage of protein is good with 31%. Crude fat is reduced, but the percentage range is between 6% and 10%, so is this really a reduction? Maybe in some boxes. Maybe not in others. Crude fiber is at 5%. Moisture is at 10% - which is less than the usual 12% - do older cats need a dryer formula?
It is recommended that when you are changing your cats regular diet to do so gradually over a period of up to a week. Just add a bit more of the new food each time while slowly reducing the amount of the old food. This will allow your cat's systems to adjust to a new formula and prevent any tummy or digestive upsets.
