Pros: taste the same as regular Fritos corn chips, less sodium than expected
Cons: taste salty, mostly broken, inconsistent shapes, not rippled
The Bottom Line: If you really want to dip corn chips, I strongly recommend getting Wise Dipsy Doodle corn chips instead.

I'm not a huge fan of corn chips, but every once in a while I get a craving for them. I picked up a package of Fritos Scoops! corn chips the last time this happened. Billed as corn chips designed to scoop and hold various dips, the chips use the same recipe as normal Fritos corn chips but with a slightly different size and shape. Believe it or not, I've actually had another brand of corn chips designed to be used as scoops. A local convenience store carries Wise Dipsy Doodle chips and, since corn chips tend to be an impulse buy for me, I'm more likely to buy them there than at a real grocery store. I'm sad to report these other chips are far superior to the Fritos Scoops! corn chips. First of all, the Wise chips are just a bit less salty, allowing a bit more of the actual cornmeal flavor to shine through. With Fritos, the predominant taste is salt. Both are still very salty, mind you, and should be avoided by anyone on a low salt diet or who is particularly sensitive to the taste of salt. The second difference is that the Wise chips are rippled. It's a wide ripple - more like what you'd seen in a potato chip billed as wavy rather than rippled - but it makes the chips a bit crunchier and makes them feel thicker and thus more substantial. I feel fuller from the Wise chips than from approximately the same amount of Fritos. The ripples also help keep more liquidy dips on the chip if you do, indeed, decide to dip them (I've used them with dips and just snacked on them without dips). It's also harder to use the Fritos Scoops! for dipping because their size and shape are inconsistent. While larger and wider than standard corn chip strips, only about one in three Scoops! chips form a full concave oval, the shape obviously intended for the chip. Many chips have no real curvature at all while others are bent over so far that the point of one side of the oval actually touches the middle of the chip. Quite a few of the chips arrive broken, losing any real shape they may have once had. I think the ripples in the Wise chips help make the chips thicker and more difficult to break; I'd estimate that at least 90% of those chips are unbroken on average. An official serving of Fritos Scoops! is an ounce, or approximately 10 whole chips. Since so few of these chips remain whole, it's difficult to estimate a serving if you wish to stick to the officially recommended portion. For each ounce you consume, you're eating 90 calories, 10 grams of fat, 110 milligrams of sodium (a surprisingly small number given the taste of the chips), 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein. The Fritos Scoops! chips are effectively slightly larger corn chips with a slightly different shape than those sold as normal corn chips. Unlike the competing brand, they don't really offer anything extra to folks looking to dip corn chips into some other food. If you like regular Fritos and see Fritos Scoops! on the shelf instead, there's no harm in buying them. If you really want to dip corn chips, I strongly recommend getting Wise Dipsy Doodle corn chips instead.
