A continuous battle

Written: Oct 31 '05 (Updated Jul 12 '06)
Pros:Immediate relief for the cat, the fleas just disappeared. Easy to use.
Cons:Doesn't protect for 1 month--expensive. Poor instructions for when fleas return within 1 month.
The Bottom Line: I recommend with reservation only because I know the desperation of owners trying to fight these little blood-suckers. It helps a little in an ongoing battle.

When we discovered our indoor kitty had fleas, the news fell like a bombshell... this is NOT something we have a lot of time to deal with right now! We literally barred him access to the bedroom, and went on a full-force crusade to sanitize any and all places fleas, eggs, and the yucky dropping might be. We immediately armed ourselves with sprays, powders (for carpet and kitty), room insecticide-bombs, and, of course, many cat-baths with insecticide shampoo. After a several week intensive battle (vacuuming, combing the cat and drowning fleas), I finally got my hands on Frontline Plus for Cats, having heard that it was "the best" and will kill all stages of flea development. (Our local petstore had actually been waiting to be restocked!)

I purchased a 3-month supply, which consists of three plastic applicators filled with the insecticide. Application was easy enough just following the directions. There is quite a bit of liquid in each monthly capsule, and the cat didn't appreciate the application. For some time afterward, he tried to get at the spot and clean it off, but I was glad that he seemed fairly unsuccessful in doing so. I noticed that following the application, my cat developed yucky smelling Frontline-breath, but this side-effect would be tolerable if the product really works.

So, what happened? After application, the fleas were gone. (Oct. 15)

Every couple days, I would comb again, just to check for any fleas or flea droppings. And all was fine until last night. (Oct. 29) Unfortunately, after 2 weeks the fleas have returned... and their nasty dirt has returned....and the battle continues.

I cannot re-apply the Frontline Plus for another two weeks. So, I'm back to the powders, and combing. I can only surmise that eggs are hatching from inside the house and reinfecting him. So my husband is on vacuum-patrol and using insecticide-bombs again.

In my opinion, Frontline Plus does a good job of killing the fleas and eggs ON the pet. It does not, however, deter reinfestation for a full month. I am counting the days until I can apply it to the cat again, because I've run out of options. I will update this review when possible.

[The package tells you Frontline is waterproof. It doesn't tell you whether you should give your animal a bath with insecticide shampoo once Frontline stops working! Would giving him a bath reduce any remaining effectiveness of Frontline?]

******Update******
Following the instructions, I waited the full 30 days to reapply Frontline because I was concerned about putting too many chemicals on my cat. During the two-week time of waiting, I quarantined the cat to a single room, and I vacuumed this room and the rest of the apartment daily. This was very sad for my cat who is very social; however, each day I managed to comb out fewer (and smaller) fleas from his coat. I also bathed the cat with flea shampoo just prior to the second Frontline treatment.

When I applied the second dose of Frontline (Nov. 15th), this seemed to take care of the remaining fleas on his body. I was wary about allowing the cat out into the rest of the apartment because there would be much more exposure to areas that might be flea-infested, so I kept him quarantined for another full month while diligently cleaning the apt. No further fleas showed up on the cat in that time, and the following month we moved to an apartment with hardwood floors.
