I live in the south, in the pines, and I have an Akita, a Lhasa and a husband. I also have fleas and ticks. Since I like to bring the dogs in the house, I have also experienced fleas in the house. Obviously, that gives my husband the best reason in the world to "get those dogs out of the house". But with Frontline, there's no dog banning from my house!
I've done my time with the shampoo, flea collars and the pest control guy. Being a fan of "natural remedies", I even planted mint around the dog houses and the dog pen. But I was always looking over my shoulders and in the carpet for fleas. And when a friend of mine actually contracted tick fever, I decided it was time to declare war on fleas and ticks.
Frontline is the ONLY reasonable solution. Even when I bought it from my vet ($15.00/month for my 100 pound dog)it was worth it. But now I order it in 6 month packages from Entirely Pets.com and for less than $10.00 per month each, my dogs are totally protected from fleas and ticks.
I start treatment in March when the weather warms up. Frontline comes in a little plastic vial. You pop the top and apply it to your dog between his shoulder blades. My dogs don't love it, but they don't really fight it either. The little one rolls on her back and tries to get it off, but she obviously doesn't succeed, because she doesn't get fleas. I like the packaging it comes in. I have a real phobia when it comes to chemicals and I've never gotten it on myself.
FRONTLINE really works! I have removed a few dead ticks from both my dogs, and I've read other reviewers who didn't like doing that. But hey, have you ever removed live ones? It's a no-brainer to me. The only good tick is a dead one and that makes me know it's working.
As I said, I don't like using chemicals, but what are the alternatives? If you don't keep the fleas off the dogs, the fleas get in the house and then you have to have the chemicals sprayed in your house. And as far as I can tell, after 5 years I can't see any damage by the Frontline. All the vets here recommend it. When you weigh the risks against getting sick yourself, well, I don't really love my dogs more than I love my husband!
