Susie-34668's Full Review: Frontline Top Spot for Dogs
I have had cats all my life. The one problem that seems to haunt me is fleas. It makes no difference that here in Florida they are indoor cats.
I have used lots of different sprays, also powders that go in the carpet, and drops. The Hartz 3 in 1 Flea and Tick drops were my choice right up until Y.T. passed away. He had a heart murmur and I hadn't realized that these should not be used with a cat with health issues. I had used it for months and it had seemed to keep them at bay.
I spoke to several of my friends and also checked Epinions, to find a flea control for my Q.T., who is 19 years old. I finally decided on the Frontline products. I phoned Merial who make Frontline Top Spot to make sure it was safe to use on my elderly pet. They gave me the okay and so I headed out to our local pet store. A 3 monthly pack was $30.49 plus 7% sales tax. I even asked the sales assistance to make sure it was safe for Q.T. She read the package and suggested I check with my vet.
I bought the product at the beginning of October 2005. I read the instructions on the back of the package. It was to be applied to the back of the neck, between the shoulders. I had my husband hold Q.T. and I opened up the fur in that area, showing the skin. I squeezed all the liquid onto the area. Q.T. didn't smell too good but wasn't unhappy with me treating him.
So I waited to see if the fleas went away. After a couple of weeks there were even more on Q.T. and they were jumping on Len and myself. I read the packet and it said that it killed 98-100% of adult fleas on the pet with 18 hours. It also kills flea eggs and larvae. Now this was starting to get embarrassing. Here in Florida in October I wear shorts with white socks and sneakers. I had the fleas on my socks and biting me. I wanted to scratch just like my cat.
There was a toll free number to phone for help, 1-888-MERIAL-1. I called and asked them why the fleas were getting worse. The gentleman at the end of the phone explained about the flea cycle. They start with eggs, then larvae, next pupae, and then adult fleas. I was told that it could take 2-3 months to break the cycle. I was not happy but went along with it.
At the beginning of November I applied the next vial of Frontline Top Spot. Q.T. was still biting, washing, and scratching. The fleas continued. Over the next month I phoned the help line on a weekly basis. I got the same answer.
Now it was December and the third treatment was applied. I was praying that it would work and the fleas would finally die. I had wanted to invite friends to a party at my house before Christmas but couldn't do it. You guessed it was because of the fleas on Q.T. and jumping on Len and myself.
Finally at the end of December I phoned and told the people at Merial that I was really disappointed with their product. It had a 100% money back guarantee with it. I informed them that I wanted my money returned. I had to send the receipt and the empty box including the reference number they gave me on the phone. Today I got a refund check for the $30.49.
It is now January 10th and Q.T. still has fleas. They are not jumping off of him and I haven't found any on my socks. His stomach is red and I know it is itching and driving him crazy.
The only advice that Merial gave me was to purchase Frontline Plus. This product is supposed to break the life cycle of fleas. I will purchase this product with my refund check. I hope it won't be another 3 months before I write a review on the new product. I just hope it works.
I do not have the packet to give you information from it, but this is from their website: www.merial.com
