Nikjdog's Full Review: Frontline Top Spot for Dogs
I have been very lucky in the past with my pets, but last year was a different story. Nikki, my furry family member started acting very strange. She wouldn’t play with me as she usually did; she became very lackadaisical, and even stopped eating. I thought it was a passing thing so at first so I did the stupid thing and ignored it. A few days later the situation even worsened. She didn’t even want to go outside. All Nikki would do was lay around. Then I noticed she was biting herself. Raw skin was exposed in various areas of her body. Now I panicked. I decided to take a closer look at her and I couldn’t believe what I saw. She was infested with fleas and ticks. I didn’t understand how she got them as she was wearing a flea color and she never had this problem before. For that matter none of the dogs or cats I previously owned had them. Call me lucky but this was my first experience with fleas and ticks.
The following morning I called the veterinarian. He told us to bring her right over. So faster than a speeding bullet I was there. Upon his examination we discovered that Nikki was infested beyond belief. Now I was thinking how silly it was of me to initially ignore the problem. My dog was asking for help and I did nothing. I asked the doctor as to why she got these creepy things all over her when she was wearing a flea collar. He gave me a demonstration that shocked me. The chemical powder of flea collars adhere to the top of some of Nikki’s hair but in the areas that no powder was on, fleas and ticks would congregate. They would then work themselves under the powder and start to do their thing.
Now that we found out what the problem was but we needed to correct the situation. The veterinarian applied a product called Frontline Top Spot. I looked at him at asked if that little thing would cure Nikki. He said just wait and see. He advised us not to give her a bath for at least 3 days but after that we could.
We took Nikki home and later that night we began to see a few dead fleas on the floor where she usually parks herself for the night. We cleaned up these little ugly things and then it was off to sleep for all of us.
The next morning we woke up to Nikki’s barking while standing next to her bed. She was using her paws to push the dead fleas off the bed. How silly that looked! I wondered how she saw them. But she did! There must have been hundreds of them all lying dead on her bed. We did, of course, throw the bed cover into the washing machine. Nikki followed us to the washing machine, tail wagging and as happy as can be. She then looked at me as if she was saying, “you dope how did you let this happen to me?” We repeated the same procedure for the next few days and each time Nikki had the same reaction.
Ok, so what is Frontline Top Spot? It is a spot treatment for control of fleas and ticks on both cats and dogs.
How to use it- the small vial is snapped open by bending it back at the top. Locate a spot between the shoulder blades and part the hair. Then place the applicator on the exposed skin and apply. Make sure the contents are squeezed directly onto the skin avoiding the hair. Check the vial to make sure all of the liquid has been applied. If not repeat the procedure again.
Frontline Top Spot contains the active ingredient Fipronil (9.7%) which targets fleas and ticks. Fipronil collects in the oils of the skin and hair follicles and continues to be released from hair follicles onto the skin. Inert ingredients make up the other 90.3%.
It can be applied prior to the infestation of fleas and ticks. This will prevent any infestation. It will kill fleas for up to three months and ticks for at least a month. If you live in an area with a high infestation apply Frontline Top Spot once a month.
This product is designed for external use only and it should not be used on dogs or cats that are under 10 weeks of age. It is harmful if swallowed by either our furry friends or humans. The package insert contains information on first aid if an accident should occur. It is also highly flammable should it should not be used near an open flame.
Well I learned my lesson the hard way and that while Frontline Top Spot might seem expensive think of the money you would have to spend if your pet has to make a trip to the veterinarian. I was stupid and Nikki was acting silly. But I can’t blame her.
Frontline Top Spot is available for both dogs and cats and is sold according the the animals weight.
