Cleavenger's Full Review: Frontline Top Spot for Dogs
I've used Front Line Top Spot for about 2 years on my outdoor cat. It works so well on killing the fleas and ticks for a month at a time on cats, and up to three months on dogs. I also want to make a special mention that this product kills deer ticks which are know to carry Lyme disease.
The treatments come packaged in a 3-month supply, and is sold according to body weight. The treatments are applied by parting the hair on the back of the animal's neck and squeezing the liquid out of the little vial and onto the skin in a single spot. The liquid is then distributed by the oil on the skin and is released from the hair follicles over the next 30 days to provide continuous protection.
This stuff is nasty; so be sure not to get any on your skin, and don't pet the animal until the spot on the back of the neck has dried. The reason for using it on the back of the neck is to keep the animal from turning around and licking it off. Also, Front Line is not recommended for kittens under 12 weeks of age. You'll have to stick to something not quite as strong like a dusting of flea powder.
My personal experience using it on my outdoor cat has been unbelievable. I start with the treatments in late spring when I notice the cat scratching and see fleas jumping. My cat sleeps on a white sheet and the next day you can see little black fleas that have fallen off and died. We don't just have trouble with flea's but ticks as well. I'll start seeing ticks on his fur if I forget to apply the next treatment when I should have, but within 24 hours he is flea and tick free.
I also picked up a cat from the animal shelter one year and she was covered in fleas and had scabs all her because she was allergic to the flea bites. I used a combination of the other flea killers and it did her no good, she continued to be miserable. I finally purchased some Front Line and used it only once and it killed all the fleas. Since we kept her inside, we used a flea bomb in the house after applying the Front Line and she has been fine ever since.
One important thing to note is that the animal should not be bathed for a few days before and after the application. The packaging says only 24 hours, but the veterinarian I worked for advised longer. At the price you have to pay, it's better to be safe than sorry.
I've used flea collars, spray's, powders and dips, and none do near as good a job as the Front Line. The cat would cry and foam at the mouth whenever I used one of those listed items to kill the fleas. Needless to say I wasn't too happy with the scratches I received as a "thank you".
One caution that needs to be exercised is this flea product should NOT be applied to animals that are pregnant, nursing or sick. You'll have to use an alternative flea product until it's condition changes.
The only thing I don't like about this product is the cost. It wasn't too bad while I worked at a veterinarian's office and could buy it at cost, but paying full price could break a person up if you had several animals to treat.
I've been really satisfied with the results and highly recommend this product to someone who finds themselves battling fleas all summer long.
