The Bottom Line:

This is one of those hidden gems that you've probably never heard of, but should watch if you like horror/thrillers.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

The best thing about Frozen is that I've never seen anything like it before. When most horror movies are generic copycats of previous films, this one stands out as something truly unique. It takes a simple premise that could happen in real life, and turns it into a tense thriller.

Three young people decide to go skiing at a resort and bribe their way onto the lift in order to avoid paying the normal ticket prices. The three consist of two guys and a girl. The guys are best friends and the girl is one guy's girlfriend. They go up the mountain and ski back down, only to find that the resort is closing early because of bad weather. Since they had just gotten started, the trio talks the lift operator into sending them up one last time. Halfway through their trip up, a miscommunication between the operator and another employee of the lodge leaves the three young people stranded on the lift and dangling a hundred feet above the ground...and the resort is going to be closed until the following weekend.

I won't give you any spoilers here, other than to say there are very limited options as to how these three characters can figure a way out of their predicament. They can try to jump down and hope to survive the fall, or they can try to climb across the cable which is full of sharp little metal splits like barbed wire. As the snow falls and the temperature drops, waiting for help stops being an option after the first night is over. Although you'd expect one of them to pull out a cell phone and call for help, it is clearly explained early on that they don't carry a cell phone while skiing.

When they get stranded, it's only about 30 minutes into this movie, so the following hour depicts their ordeal. You're probably thinking that an hour of watching three people sit in a ski lift must be boring as hell, but it certainly is not. I loved how writer/director Adam Green took his time to build tension and even wrote in a little foreboding by having the characters talk about the movie Jaws. You'll soon realize the impact of that discussion when a pack of wolves show up and start circling beneath the lift like a swarm of sharks.

It's easy to judge the behavior of these characters and say they do some dumb things, but most horror movies hinge on characters doing dumb things. What I got from this story was that three spoiled rich kids find themselves in a problem that they can't buy or talk their way out of, and they don't really know what to do. I don't even know what I would do in that situation. You can sit on your couch and shake your head at some things these people do, but what would you do if you were freezing to death and worried about being eaten by wolves? That being said, I didn't think this movie ever went over the top with the character behavior, so at no point did it seem silly. The comic relief is pretty non-existent during the last half hour.

The main guy here is played by Shawn Ashmore, who I recognized from the X-Men movies as Bobby Drake, aka Iceman. It's kind of ironic that he was cast in a movie called Frozen when his most recognizable role is from playing the character Iceman. The other guy is played by Kevin Zegers, who was in Dawn of the Dead and a bunch of other stuff. He looks a little like Zach Efron. Emma Bell plays the female lead, and she can currently be seen in the new AMC series called The Walking Dead.

In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by Frozen. I probably never would have watched it, but a recommendation from Aintitcool.com peaked my curiosity and I'm glad I checked it out. This would be the perfect horror movie to watch during a snowy night.
