NOTE: This is coming from the eyes of someone completely unprofessional with cameras and who's career is not along the lines of photography. It's recreational photography.
WHY
With all the hip, new electronic devices coming out, lacking the nice little gadgets would be inconvenient as well as embarrassing. And with all the neat little signts out there to see and remember, why not a camera? Since the family is used to the disposable one-time-use cameras and the now old-fashioned cameras, my dad searched for something easy to use, and by George we got one. Not so many buttons, easy to function, and simple to get to your computer.
PERFECT FOR
Someone who's not in the photography business and is like us, not so good with the multi-buttoned thousand-featured digital cameras produced. It's great for vacations and extremely easy to use (especially with an XP computer). Also, editing skill is needed with this thing.
BAD FOR
Someone who's good with a camera and needs the features and buttons, and a precise picture.
THREE FEATURES
Still images The first picture (the one of the camera) near the dial at the top of the camera. This is the one you use for taking pictures. Quite simple. All you have to do is turn the dial and take a picture. Too bright? Go to menu (the button near the screen of the camera), option (with the arrow buttons), and LCD brightness. It has a self-timer, too!
Viewing the images This one's the middle picture. That's the beauty of having a digital. If Grandma had her eyes closed or if a nasty shot is displayed, just delete. If you'd like to zoom in, it lets you do that. Of course, with editing software the delete is often unnecessary.
Movies What? It does MOVIES?! Well, no it doesn't. It does moving pictures for 20 seconds (high quality) or 80 seconds (lower quality), no sound.
USB TIME
When in view mode, if you press the menu button and go to options, then set-up, you can choose what you want the camera to do when it's plugged in with the USB.
PC CAMWhen you thought it did it all, it does more. It's a webcam that most messenger programs (Yahoo!, MSN) will recognize as a webcam. It's a great webcam, too. Works very well and does not do the job slowly. Become a Jennifer Ringley, easy.
DSC I haven't a clue what that stands for, but this is the feature you use when you want your pictures and/or movies. The camera comes with a viewing software (but it doesn't always work, so I prefer to do it the hard way, by going to Control Panel, scanners and cameras, and getting the pictures that way) that will either open up when the camera is plugged in with DSC, or fail and you'll use the alternative method.
BAD PICTURES
Some of the pictures just suck, either fuzzy or red-eye or maybe it's off timing and the main object is not centered. Never fear (even though this camera often produces red-eye and is slow), for the technology that is editing software makes every picture look nice. When editing my pictures, the two that help out are MSPaint (just about everyone knows what that is) and ArcSoft PhotoImpression4. MSPaint is what to use for centering and cropping, but not anything else. PI4 has a multitude of features, such as the removal of red-eye and sharpening. This camera produces a lot of blurring, off-centering, and red-eye.
GOOD THINGS
I love taking pictures. Anything even remotely interesting will make me whip out this little baby and take a shot. And because I am not good with cameras, the digital viewing feature is a really big help for me. Aside from that, the ease-of-use and compact size are great for travel. It's not every day when you get to go to Europe, of course, so get pictures.
THE BUTTONS OF THE CAMERA
There aren't many, except the one every camera has, the shutter. Right near that one is a dial that switches to the three main features. The other one for the top is the power on/off switch.
At the screen (no more looking through that small hole!), the display, menu, and back buttons are clearly marked. The zoom buttons have engraved pictures, and the arrow buttons are self-explanatory.
CONCLUSION
From the perspective of someone who loves pictures but is not good with a camera, I give it a good five stars. It is extremely easy to use, and despite the cons (which can be easily fixed with the editing software recommended), it's great for the family.
