Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I have viewed many of Stanley Kubrick's films. His style of
film making is intriguing. A Clockwork Orange for instance, is disturbing, and brutally graphic at times. Then
we have the other side of the Kubrick spectrum, "2001" which
pits Man vs.machine in a masterful way, so much so it gives you chills to hear Hal's voice at times. You may find yourself disconnecting your computer at night, after watching it.
In this film, I felt Kubrick really shines. He captures the
events of the 60's Marine Corps. training for the Vietnam War. You can feel the character's tension during the training scenes and feel empathy for Pvt.Pyle, safe in the fact, that it's not you having to endure what he is dealing with.
I have to admit, the ending left me hanging. I felt it could have been better. Being a Kubrick film, I expected to leave the room holding my stomach from a sucker punch.
People who were in the US Services and anyone who loves anything military will enjoy this film. It contains very graphic scenes and adult language. Not a film for the mild mannered person.
I would rate this movie an 8 on the Kubrick scale of film making.
