Wonka Candy always brings a smile to my face. Sometimes it's nostalgia, sometimes it's the wacky Wonka characters and sometimes it's how people react to a Wonka gift. With Valentine's Day around the corner, stores have already started displaying treats, cards and gifts for the most romantic holiday of the year. While others will be planning quiet, sweet dinners by candlelight I will be dealing with [more than likely] a house full of kids that are hopped up on sugar. The Wonka Lik-M-Aid Fun Dip assortment isn't new, the Valentine's Day packaging is the same as previous years. What separates this from the regular run of the mill Fun Dip? Instead of having three flavors per package it only has one. Even so, it is a sweet treat that's perfect for Valentine's Day!
Wonka Fun Dip Valentine Day Card Kit
One thing that you need to know about these before you start looking for them is they aren't labeled for individual resale so your best bet for finding them would be places like Wal-Mart and Target. Generally they are in the seasonal section or on end caps with other Valentine related merchandise. Buying them individually you are looking at paying about .50 cents a piece at drug stores or candy shops but you have no idea how long they have been sitting around of it they are last years stock. Another problem with them being sold individually is that the candy sticks inside the packs can be broken, sure you can stand there and try to feel the package but you won't always be able to tell because the stick is in a separate pouch. I'd rather pay for an entire 12 or 24 pack than to buy them individually and get raked over the coals in regards to price.
The packets are all done up in completely Valentine colors and have various Wonka characters on the fronts and backs; there is a space on the front or back to write the "to" and "from" if a child is taking them to school for a 'sweets swap'. Writing the names on the packets is a daunting challenge, press too hard or use a ball point pen and you are going to end up putting a hole in it. If you are going to write out names, use a Sharpie or permanent marker and be careful. In my opinion these are a unisex type of treat; sometimes boys dont like to participate in 'sweet swaps' because the treats are on the girlie side. These can be handed out by boys or girls without any embarrassment.
One thing that makes this a little deceptive is the name of the product; it is not a true Valentine's Day Card Kit because it doesn't contain an actual card; yes, there is a spot to write the names on it but when you think of a card kit you think of something with a paper Valentine, sweet and envelope. The flavors are truly Wonka; cherry, apple and grape with the colors last year but there has been talk of orange being added to the line up. Of course you can't just call them "grape, cherry and apple", to be a real Wonka flavor it has to have a weird name like Cherry-Yum-Diddly. The powder is pure finely granulated sugar, moreover the stick that you use the "lick and dip" is also pure sugar. Needless to say, this is why some schools don't allow kids to dig into the sweets until they get home.
The 12 packs usually sell for about $2.00 to $2.50 and the 24 packs for about $4.00 so larger the quantity you go with, the better the price break. Larger Wal-Mart and Target stores usually have these on the shelves right after they get rid of the Christmas stuff that no one wanted. The only advantage of buying these individually rather than in the packages is that you get to choose the flavor you want; if you only want or need a few then that's a great way to go but if you need more than 10 - 15 of them, go with the packages.
The Bottom Line
I've bought these the past few years and I have no doubt that I will get them again this year. They are a nice twist on the usual Valentine candy fodder that most people buy and it's always great to host a party, give these to kids, let them open them ten minutes before their parents come to get them and watch the mayhem unfold. The flavors are all Wonkafied, the artwork is comical and it's something that kids really get a kick out of eating. Just make sure you have a sweeper or Dirt Devil handy because it's never a good thing to have this stuff get worked into the carpet!
As always, thanks for the visit
