The Bottom Line: This is a fun, fast paced game that your kids are sure to enjoy!

I have two little girls ages 4 and 2 and both of them love games! Whenever I am out shopping, I am always keeping my eye out for a fun new game they might enjoy. What caught my eye with the "Cookin Cookies" card game was the neat little tin lunch box it came in. I thought it was a fun alternative to the typical cardboard box that most games are packaged in. It had a handle on the top for carrying and it even had the lock system for opening and closing, just like real lunchboxes have. This was a fun alternative to the typical cardboard box that most games are packaged in. On the front of the tin I read the words, “Spoon Smackin’ Fun!” and since my daughters love helping me make cookies at home, I thought this would be an enjoyable, less messy, way to “bake” with my girls. I also liked the fact that the compact tin would be easy to store and take with us to enjoy on family trips. The tin would also make for less worries because I knew it wouldn’t get smashed, bent, or torn like most game boxes do.

When I got the “Cookin Cookies” game home and opened it up, I first went through all the contents to make sure we weren’t missing anything. I found 4 plastic spoons which all had a suction cup attached underneath the scoop portion of the spoon. The spoons were red, blue, orange, and purple. By pulling gently on the handle, you can expand its length and lock it into position. The length makes it easier to reach when smacking ingredient cards. This does not take a lot of muscle and the handle was easily expanded by my 4 year old. Also included in the contents were eight recipe cards. The recipe cards include two each of the following: peanut butter cookies, oatmeal cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and two recipe cards that read “first cookies”. On each of the recipe cards, there are five ingredients. The ingredients vary depending on which cookie recipe you get. For example, the chocolate chip cookie recipe would have sugar, flour, chocolate chips, butter, and eggs. Along with the ingredient word, there is also a picture next to the word so little kids who can’t read can look at the image. On the recipe cards reading “first cookie”, the ingredients include sugar, flour, butter, eggs, and first flavor with a picture of raisins, chocolate chips, oatmeal, and peanut butter. This means that when a player chooses this recipe card, they can choose which flavor of cookies they want to bake. There are also 26 round ingredient cards that each has a single image of an ingredient displayed on one side. Included in that 26 ingredient cards, is 4 rotten egg cards, displaying a cracked green egg with ooze coming out.

The object of this card game is to be the first player to collect each of the ingredients needed to “bake” the cookies from the recipe card they were given. You begin the game by shuffling the recipe cards face down and then dealing one to each player. Each player examines their recipe card so they will know which ingredients are needed to “bake” their cookies. Each player also chooses a Cookie Smackin’ Spoon. The round ingredient cards are then shuffled and spread out, face down in the middle of the playing area. When picking a playing area, you need to keep in mind that there are 26 cards so you will need a large enough area to scatter the cards.

Once the game is set up and everyone is ready to go with his or her spoons and recipe cards, the fun begins! All players begin playing at the same time by yelling “Ready set…bake!” and then all the players start smacking their spoons onto the round ingredient cards. The suction on the spoon will stick to a card. One a card is picked with the spoon, the player looks at the card to see if it is an ingredient they need to “bake” the cookie on the recipe card they were given. If it is one they need, they collect the card and continue smacking other ingredient cards. If they pick up an ingredient card that is not needed for their recipe, they put it back face down in the playing area. The game continues with everyone playing at the same time and moving as fast as they can, trying to collect all the ingredients displayed on their individual recipe card. Each player must collect: 1 egg card, 1 flour card, 1 sugar card, 1 butter card, and 1 flavoring card (ex: chocolate chips, raisins, etc.).

In a hurry to find the needed ingredients for your cookies, you might find a “Rotten Egg”. There are 4 of them mixed in with the other ingredient cards and if your spoon picks up one of these, the game is temporarily stopped. When a player gets this card, he or she yells “Rotten Egg”, and then that player has to throw all their collected ingredients back in the card pile and quickly mix up the cards. Once the cards have been mixed up again, the player yells, “Ready set…bake!” and the game resumes.

The winner is the first person to collect all the ingredients needed to “bake” the cookies on their recipe card.

This game proved to be a hit with my girls! The recommended ages for this game are 4+ but my two year old even loves it. She thinks it is hilarious when she gets the “Rotten Egg” card. Both my girls love using the spoons to smack the cards. This game allows for 2-4 players so my husband and I will play with our girls and it makes for a fun, mess-free way to “bake” cookies.
