Fuzzi Bunz are the third diapering system we have tried and the best. It seems, on reading previous reviews, that the company has continuously been improving design and quality, so newer reviews of this product are more likely to be about the product you will buy. (And, by extension, reviews from several years ago are probably about products that are no longer available, and likely discuss problems that the newer designs have been developed to address.)
Fuzzi Bunz are a "pocket" diaper. They have a fleece liner and a waterproof outside layer. They fasten with snaps, and there are three snaps on each side of the waist and four at each leg, so they are very adjustable. To use this product, you just put a prefold or a specially designed insert into the pocket formed by the two layers. They are designed so that the process of putting the prefold into the pocket is *really* easy. We usually stuff the diapers with the prefolds once they come out of the washer, so that they are ready to use when needed.
1) I have found these diapers to be very easy to use, and babysitters have said the same. It is no more difficult to prepare these diapers or put one of these on a baby than it is to diaper him or her with a disposable, which is not the case with the other systems of cloth diapers and diaper covers that I have tried.
2)These seem very comfortable, although to be fair, my son never really complained about the other ones either. However, I really like the fact that the wetness stays away from his skin. With other cloth diapers, almost as soon as I put a new one on, he would get damp (since babies wet a lot!) and just get progressively wetter until I changed him. With these diapers, he rarely experiences that feeling of wetness next to his skin. Even at night, the inner layer will be soaked, and he will still be comfortable, although after six or so hours, even the fleece gets somewhat damp. Leaks have never been a problem with these diapers, especially if you are sure to tuck the fleece at the back of the diaper into the waistband rather than letting it stick up. I also like the fact that these snap, rather than using Velcro. With Velcro, I was always concerned that a rough surface would be right next to the baby's skin. There simply is no rough surface on these diapers to scratch.
And another thing...all the Fuzzi Bunz were in the laundry the other day so for the first time in a long time, I used my old system with a prefold inside a diaper cover. I noticed that, now that my son is more active, the cotton prefold gets "smooshed" between his legs, so that the absorbant surface is not always where it needs to be, which can lead both to leaks and to rubbing of the cover against his skin. With the Fuzzi Bunz, because the fleece surface is always next to the baby's skin, it doesn't matter if the insert gets "smooshed" because the fleece continues to wick away the moisture toward the more absorbant surface (the insert), and the soft and dry surface is always next to the baby's skin.
3)These are a dream to care for. They come out of the wash looking like they did when they came out of the package. No stains! How is that possible? It must be magic!
I love these diapers, and I use them exclusively, although I know some people buy them for just at night. They are somewhat expensive initially. However, for under $200, I have a dozen Fuzzi Bunz and 2 dozen prefolds (which I am using from my previous diapering system), which will last me at least a year, and then I'll probably have to buy more Fuzzi Bunz, for another $175 or so. It's not any more than I'm spending on car seats! (And way less than if I were buying disposables, but if you're reading this review, I probably don't have to sell you on cloth vs. disposables.) You can use other cloth diapering systems that will cost you less. However, in my experience, the extra cost is worth it to me for the greater convenience, the ease of putting on the baby (especially for babysitters who might be unused to cloth diapers), and less wetness and more softness next to the baby's skin.
Because I use them with prefolds, they are bulkier than other methods of diapering. However, you can buy special inserts and doublers that (reportedly) have the same absorbancy with much less bulk. I can't speak to that since I haven't used them. I have only used these diapers with prefolds because I already had the prefolds. Probably, if I were starting this system from scratch, I would buy the less bulky inserts. I actually may do that as he gets bigger, because with less bulk in the insert, he could probably wear the cover longer.
I strongly recommend this product! I have been very happy with it, and will continue to use it until my son is out of diapers.
