We started out using cloth prefolds during the day and disposables at night. We began having leakage problems at night around 5 months when our son would sleep through all night. I bought a small number of FB and started using those at night time. I am hooked! I think it's the best night time diapering system, hands down! They consist of a fleece inner layer which wicks moisture away from the baby's skin and a water-proof PUL outer layer. Inbetween these two layers is the "pocket" for the absorbing inserts.
Initially I was going to use my prefolds in the pocket but now I use the FB terry insert and the FB terry doubler lined with fleece. Both go into the pocket and I find that preferable to the cloth prefolds. (For first-timers, inserts are what is always used in the pocket and doublers are added when extra absorption is needed.) I purchased the fleece lined doublers instead of the original terry-only doublers so that I could also use them in my day-time prefolds on outings etc. and he would have the advantage of the fleece "wicking" away moisture in his cloth diaper. So, I am getting double duty out of the doublers and they work great. Another alternative to the FB terry doublers are the micro-fiber automotive towels you can get at Target and Walmart fairly inexpensively. Two of those, I have found, just about equal one diaper doubler, with a bit more bulk.
The only time we have had leakage problems was when he was right on the verge of a size change between small and medium; his thighs were just a bit too small to fit well in a medium and just a bit too large to still fit in his smalls. That lasted only about a week and now he goes all night with no leaking just like in the beginning.
Since I use them at night only, I get by right now with 4 in each size and wash about every other day so it was not a huge, intolerable expense. They have held up great wash after wash. I wash them just like my cloth diapers; dry diaper pail (separate the inserts before putting in the pail), hot soak, hot wash with scent-free Tide, and two cold rinses. I prefer to line dry my FB, but frequently will machine dry the inserts on medium or low heat. Initially I was afraid that the fleece would become stained and unsightly, but no stains at all, they almost look like the day I bought them. Simple. I love these diapers.
The sizing run from "Preemie" for babies 7 lbs and up--which is great for petite newborns and not just preemies, all the way up to "Extra Large" for 35 lb. plus toddlers. The sizing is pretty much "right on", the Fuzzi Bunz website has a sizing chart and most retailers will also help you with sizing. Like I mentioned above, we had a week or so where we had to wait for our baby's thigh to fill out enough to fit the next size up, but the diapers are so flexible with so many snaps, that they really conform quickly to fit each baby and "grow" with them.
I think they're a great value for the money. I also feel purchasing them with the inserts is a better value, some reviewers disagree. I used puddlesplace.com and have received excellent customer service as well as free shipping! Try a couple or add them to a shower "Wish List", I'm sure you'll love them!
