I was a little slow in going cloth with my son. I spent a little time researching it before he was born, but I was quickly overwhelmed. When he was about 9 months old we had a problem two nights in a row with the gel crystals inside of the Pampers diapers exploding through and onto him. Both mornings he woke up covered with the crystals - on his face, hands, chest, etc. That is what made me decide to go cloth.
To start I purchased a variety of cloth diapers. Some prefolds with covers, some fitteds to also go with covers, and a couple of different pockets - Happy Heiny and Fuzzi Bunz.
I quickly realized that the pocket diapers were the way to go! Prefolds and fitteds were ok, but he tended to soak through them too fast. So then I was faced with, which pockets will I buy more of?
The Happy Heinys have very cute prints - it is what drew me to them in the first place. Coverage wise they tended to leak through the material more than the Fuzzi Bunz.
The Fuzzi Bunz won my love and devotion mostly because they are easy to handle. I use a hemp insert wrapped in a microfiber towel. Stuffing that combination into a Fuzzi Bunz is much easier than the Happy Heiny. From what I can tell, the main difference is the material that is on the outside of the diaper. The inside lining is similar, but the outside lining on the Fuzzi Bunz is much smoother. It helps the insert to slide in easier. With the Happy Heiny I spend a good deal of time trying to wiggle the insert into it. And as anyone with a one year old can tell you, those precious seconds when baby is on the changing table mean a lot!
As I mentioned before, I have noticed that the Happy Heinys tend to soak through the material. Not necessarily out of the legs of the diaper, but straight through the material. I have not had this happen once with the FB.
