Fuzzi Bunz Diapering System

Written: Jul 04 '00
Pros:Helps baby stay drier, soft, adjustable
Cons:None yet

After recently taking the plunge to try cloth diapers on my six-month-old baby, I am pleasantly surprised. Things have changed a lot since I tried cloth with my first baby almost 10 years ago.

As I am building up my diaper collection, I am finding out which ones work for my daughter and which ones don’t.

One of the most unique I have acquired is the Fuzzi Bunz Stay Dry Cloth Diapering System. I was intrigued by this, and bid on a new one at auction to try it out!

What makes this different than a regular fitted diaper?

Fuzzi Bunz can be used in different ways, due to the unique design. The diaper is constructed of soft fleece in a neutral cream color. This isn’t the fleece you are picturing, but rather a micro-fleece. It is very soft. The diaper has two layers of this fleece, and there is an opening at the back waistline so it forms a pocket between the layers. You simply put a prefold diaper into the pocket and slide it in place.

Once this prefold is inside, you place it on the baby. It acts as an all-in-one diaper, called an AIO in diaper lingo. The pocket is lined with waterproof material sewn in the inside of the second layer, to contain moisture.

Once this is on your baby, you have the following layers: Fleece next to the skin, then the prefold, then the waterproof layer, and finally the second layer of fleece.

Why is fleece used in this diaper?

Fleece does not stay sopping wet. The wetness passes through the first fleece layer and is soaked up by the cotton diaper prefold inside the Fuzzi Bunz. This helps to keep baby’s skin drier inside the diaper, acting somewhat as a stay dry lining to the diaper to keep some of the moisture away.

Other features

Besides using this as an AIO diaper, you can use the Fuzzi Bunz as a diaper cover over another diaper to act as a moisture barrier between the diaper and the baby’s clothes. Fleece has been found to be an effective material for diaper covers. I was surprised to learn this!

The Fuzzi Bunz diaper is adjusted by using plastic snaps. They can be adjusted at the waist and at the leg openings, depending on the shape of your baby.

The leg openings have two choices of snap placement. The row along the waist has six snap sockets, evenly spaced. The tabs on the diaper have two snap studs with this same spacing, so you just pull it tight on your baby, find that set of snaps that line up, and fasten it.

Price and sizes

Fuzzi Bunz are offered in three sizes; infant (8-15 lbs.), regular (10-24 lbs.) and toddler (20-30+ lbs.) The website lists waist and thigh measurements to help you choose the correct size, because the weight can be misleading in the fit of a diaper.

The prices range from $12.50 - $14.50, depending on the size you choose.

This does not include a prefold diaper, since most people have their own supply, but this can be purchased at the Fuzzi Bunz site, along with “package deals” on the diapers.

Our experience

I got my Fuzzi Bunz at an online auction, listed as new and “regular” in size. I don’t know if the size was off, but it is quite tight on my daughter once the prefold is inserted. I can still use it, but if purchasing one, make sure you know the size you are getting! I didn’t get it from the maker herself, so I have no way of knowing.

This diaper has a trim fit. My daughter wears it without a cover, adding to the trim line. The leg elastic has great placement and there are no areas of gaping. It has contained everything she has put into it!

I have been very satisfied with this AIO system. A common problem of AIO diapers is that when washing them it is difficult to get all the layers inside clean because the water and detergent don’t get through as well with the waterproof barrier. With the Fuzzi Bunz system, however, you remove the prefold diaper and that is washed by itself, and the Fuzzi Bunz gets a good washing on each of the two layers.

When taking off the Fuzzi Bunz, the inner fleece is just slightly damp. I pull out the prefold and it is soaking wet. That moisture normally would have been next to baby’s skin. She is a lot drier with this method. She has worn this for stretches of about three hours at a time and hasn’t leaked through.

I haven’t made the leap to using cloth at night yet, so I can’t comment on that. When I do, the Fuzzi Bunz may be one of my first choices to get through a 10 hour night!
