The Bottom Line: I highly recommend this stay dry diapering system, particularly for overnights! I can't imagine getting through the night without these!
I had heard raves about Fuzzi Bunz for months. I had tried them once and they just hadn't worked for us. After hearing that some changes had been made to the pattern, I decided to give them another try. I am now a believer.
DESCRIPTION
Fuzzi Bunz are a stay dry cloth diapering system and are quite unique. This is a WAHM-made product, made by mothers in their homes based on an original pattern.
The Fuzzi Bunz is made of two layers of poly fleece. The two layers are not sewn completely together. Instead, an opening in between the layers allows for placement of an absorbent material inside. The inside layer of fleece is up against baby's skin and acts as a stay dry barrier. The outside layer of fleece acts as a fleece cover, to prevent leaks. Sewn to the inside of the outer layer of fleece is a layer of ultrex which is also a breathable, waterproof material. By inserting a prefold diaper into the pocket, you create a wonderful all in one system.
Fuzzi Bunz feature elastic around the leg openings to prevent leaks there. There is also elastic at the back waist on the outer layer of fleece to provide a snug yet adjustable fit. Fuzzi Bunz close with heavy duty plastic snaps. There are either two or three male snaps on each wing (depending on when the diaper was made) and either ten or twelve female snaps across the front of the diaper (again depending on which batch it came from). The snaps across the front are in two rows to give a secure fit at both the waist and the thigh.
Five sizes of Fuzzi Bunz are available: small, medium, large, petite toddler and extra large. Weight, waist and thigh measurements for each size are available at the home page. (www.motherofeden.com)
OUR EXPERIENCE
The first time I tried Fuzzi Bunz I was less than impressed. We just could not get a good fit at all. After the changes to the pattern were made, I decided to try them again. I will admit that I was desperate to find a stay dry system for my son for his overnights. He had been developing a rash from being in his wet diaper all night long (10-12 hours).
When we got the new sizing of Fuzzi Bunz, we got a much better fit. I was able to insert the prefold and we began using the Fuzzi Bunz as our exclusive night time diapering system. We've had no major leaks at all. We have experienced some wicking through to my son's pajamas, but that was due to the placement of the prefold inside (my fault) and not to the system. I have now figured out how to use these to work best for us. The type of prefold used inside affects how well the system will work. When using a single Gerber DSQ prefold, we have a potential for leaks. If using a single Suavity brand prefold, no leaks ever. With proper positioning of the prefold inside, we have experienced no more leaks or wicking at all. And the best part was that when we switched to Fuzzi Bunz exclusively for our overnights, my son's rash disappeared within a few days and has been gone completely ever since. I am a believer in this system!
We do not use our Fuzzi Bunz during the day at all since we save our small stash for our overnight diapering ventures. This system would work well during the day as a full time system too. I just can't bring myself to give up the variety of beautiful prints in our regular diapering stash.
This is a true stay dry system. As I noted above, my son's diaper rash cleared up in days when we made the switch to Fuzzi Bunz. In the morning, the prefold is absolutely soaked. The outside of the Fuzzi Bunz stays dry. My son's jammies stay dry. The bed stays dry. And my son's skin, despite the outpouring of liquid, stays dry. The inside of the Fuzzi Bunz feels dry despite all of the wetness that has passed through that layer. Absolutely amazing!
ANY FLAWS? JUST THE INCONSISTENCY!
My only complaint about Fuzzi Bunz would lie in the inconsistency in sizing that we have seen. There have been several rounds of sizing changes and when purchasing gently used Fuzzi Bunz, one must be sure to inquire as to which sizing you might be getting.
There have also been changes in the fleece used. My preference is for the microfleece, which is super thin and incredibly soft. I have received Fuzzi Bunz made with a thicker fleece and I just couldn't get the same fit with them... they seemed much bulkier and not as soft.
The ultrex used inside as a waterproof barrier has also changed, both in placement and brand/color. The newer Fuzzi Bunz have the ultrex placed in the right spot. I have some that have a green ultrex and some that have a red ultrex. The green seems to be more waterproof and more flexible to me, but I can't say that we have had any problems with the red either.
If purchasing Fuzzi Bunz new and direct from the maker, these inconsistencies should not be a problem. All new Fuzzi Bunz are made with all of the changes already established. The new design fits better and is just more reliable.
Customer service is good, with follow up from the WAHM. Shipping does take a bit longer than I would have liked (approximately 3 weeks) but is not outrageous. Fuzzi Bunz can also be purchased through a few different distributors, but the sizing may be different if purchased anywhere other than the original manufacturer.
RECOMMENDATION
After using Fuzzi Bunz for over a month now, I have no problem recommending them to anyone. In my opinion, this is the PERFECT stay dry overnight diapering system. Big thumbs up!
